Christie Brinkley Recalls The Last Fight With Billy Joel That Led To Their Divorce, He Said, 'Go..'

Legendary American singer, Billy Joel married Christie Brinkley in 1985. The duo welcomed a daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, in 1994. The couple wanted a forever love, but it was after nine years of their marriage that they parted ways. Cut to now, they are close friends. It happened recently that Billy Joel announced dealing with a brain disorder, and Christie sent him warm love by calling him our 'Piano Man'. Recently, Christie recalled the ultimate fight between her and Billy Joel that led to their divorce, despite her initial desire for it to work.

Christie Brinkley recalls how Billy Joel's drinking problem affected their relationship

In the second instalment of Billy Joel's HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Christie Brinkley shared that it's not a secret that her ex-husband's drinking problem became pretty bad. Christie said that it so happened that Billy wouldn't even remember what he did and how he was behaving and whether that behaviour would hurt anyone, when he was drinking. His drinking problem eventually turned so bad that Christie had to pretend to sleep when Billy would come home, so that she wouldn't have to deal with him at that moment. Christie could be quoted as saying:

"I don’t think it’s a secret that his drinking got pretty bad. And he couldn’t really remember what he did when he was drinking, and so he didn’t really know how he could hurt people. I just pretend that I was sleeping when he’d come in. I didn’t wanna see him in that condition."

Christie Brinkley reveals what happened during her last fight with Billy Joel that led to their divorce

Billy Joel: And So It Goes is a two-part HBO documentary, with its first instalment released on July 18, 2025, and the second part airing on July 25, 2025. In the documentary, Billy Joel's ex-wife, Christie Brinkley, recalled their last fight, which led to their nine-year-long marriage to start collapsing. She said that one day she just couldn't take it anymore, and confessed it to Billy, stating that she would leave with their daughter. Billy gave a nod to the same. Talking about their fight, Christie said:

"And then one night we had an argument and I said, ‘I really can’t take this anymore, and I’m just gonna take Alexa back up to New York and leave. And he said, ‘Yeah, fine, go.’”

Billy Joel said that his split taught him that love is not concrete, even though it feels like it, because there always remain certain things that consume love. He mentioned that he was really devastated by this, and Christie was hurt too, towards the end of their marriage. Christie said that she wanted her marriage with Billy to work, and she knew that she was lucky to have the legend at her home, filled with music, but it just didn't work out anymore. Christie mentioned:

“I tried. I wanted it to work. I knew how lucky I was having music and all of that, but...it just didn’t work.”

Christie Brinkley called 'booze' Billy Joel's 'other woman'

In her memoir, Christie Brinkley talked about her relationship with five-time Grammy-winner, Billy Joel. She stated that she never wanted to end things with Billy, but there came a point when she couldn't take it anymore, since his drinking problem had started taking a toll on their marriage. She tagged 'booze' to be his 'other woman' and mentioned that the singer preferred to stay with 'booze' rather than her. She reportedly also talked about Billy cheating on her with a caterer at a New Year's Eve concert. In her memoir, Christie also recalled the emotional toll she had to face when Billy allegedly yelled at her and her bandmates over missing pasta.
