An eighth-grade student aged 13 in Telangana's Ranga Reddy was saved from child marriage after she told her school principal about the same. The principal alerted the cops and the child protection officials about it. The incident took place in Nandigama mandal, where a lady called Sravanthi, coming from Kandivada village, got her thirteen-year-old daughter married to a forty-year-old man named Srinivas Goud. The marriage, as per an India Today report, took place on May 28, 2025.
The wedding reportedly had taken place at a temple and the girl was forced to go and stay with her in-laws. She disclosed the details of the same to her school principal, who filed a complaint, and then the officers from the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), along with the cops and child protection officials, came into action. The girl was reportedly then taken to the Sakhi Centre for counselling as well as support. Based on what was found, the cops then took Sravanthi, the mother, into custody, Srinivas, the groom, along with the priest who conducted the marriage ceremony, and the individual who got the match arranged. Now, all four have been charged under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act.
Now, the Nandigama cops have registered a case under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act against Srinivas for reportedly marrying a girl under 18. The case came to light two months post marriage was done. The minor had come back to her parents' home and joined school. She was disturbed, and then a teacher spoke to her, and during the conversation, she confessed that her mother forced her into marriage in May 2025. The teacher took the girl to the cops and filed a police complaint. Inspector Prasad who has been looking into the case revealed to the publication:
"The girl lives with her mother and brother. The mother told the house owner where they lived on rent that she wanted to marry off her daughter. A mediator brought the alliance of the 40-year-old man and the ‘marriage’ happened in May.”
The Nandigama police have filed a case against four individuals who were hands-on in ruining the life of a 13-year-old girl. The priest told the cops that the father of the girl had passed away a few years ago. Her mother had two kids and was staying alone. They had moved to Nandigama in 2023 and were staying in a rented home which was owned by Pentaiah. The girl had told the cops that her mom wanted her to get married early, so she had asked the house owner to find a groom.
Based on the references done, a match was then found and the child marriage was conducted with rituals at a temple located at the outskirts of Nandigama. Present were the parents of the bridegroom, mother of the girl and the house owner, the police said. The 13-year-old then went back to the home of Srinivas and resumed school shortly. Based on the statement of the girl, a case was then filed under Sections 9 and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
