Celine Dion Said She Is 'Still Married', But Late Husband, Rene Angelil Passed Away Nine Years Ago

Celine Dion's voice gave life to the poignant melody, My Heart Will Go On, the love theme song of Titanic. In her real life as well, the singer has proved the lyrics to the song true by keeping love for her late husband, Rene Angelil, 'last for a lifetime'. Although it has been nearly a decade since Celine lost him. In a recent interview, the singer also opened up about how she still considers herself married. 

Celine Dion says she is 'still married' to Rene Angelil 

Celine Dion and Rene Angelil were married for 21 years, and only death could do them part. After a prolonged battle with throat cancer, Rene passed away at the age of 73 in 2016. In an interview with People, Celine shared that despite passing away years ago, Rene was still her husband. She was quoted as saying:

"I'm still married to René. He's still my husband. When we have to travel to my treatments to see my doctors, I always bring pictures. And we have pictures, of course, all over the place in the house."

For the unversed, Celine was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022. This rare neurological disorder has caused the singer progressive muscle rigidity, due to which she stays homebound for the most part. However, even after Rene isn't there with her physically, Celine shared that she carries his photos everywhere with her whenever she steps out of the house. Celine said:

"My kids are always asking, 'Did you bring Papa's pictures?' And I'm like, 'Yes, I have Papa's pictures!' He's their dad, and he's my husband, and he will always be."

Celine Dion and Rene Angelil's marriage and his death 

Celine and Rene's relationship has received its share of scrutiny and backlash. The singer met him when she was 12 and he was 38. Rene was Celine's manager and remained so until his last days. Celine shared in her autobiography, My Story, My Dream, that she and Rene became romantically involved when she was 20 years old. The singer also shared that it was her who was infatuated with her twice-divorced manager while he avoided her. However, their relationship has always been a subject of scrutiny, given the age gap and the fact that Rene had been in Celine's life since she was a child. 

In 1994, Celine tied the knot with Rene. After years of struggle to conceive, they became parents to their baby boy, Rene-Charles, in 2000. Ten years later, Celine and Rene welcomed twin sons, Eddy and Nelson. However, their happy family was marred by Rene's throat cancer diagnosis. He passed away in 2016 after battling the disease. When Rene passed away, his and Celine's sons were very young. In the same interview, the singer shared:

"Even when they (their three sons) were very small, even when he (Rene) was still with us in his bed, in his room struggling, he was with us still. They would tell him, 'Dad, we're going to be watching Ratatouille tonight, so I hope you like it.' They were talking to him, and they kiss the pictures."
