Cannes 2025 Says 'Cover Up': No See-Through Dresses, Guests Are Asked To Opt For Tailored Looks

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious events that represents cinema and film culture from all over the world. But every year, the red carpet moments of the festival steal the spotlight before the films that are previewed and awarded at the event. Though the primary function of the Cannes Film Festival is to acknowledge the cinematic brilliance of different countries and their film industries, the red carpet stands as a runaway for an array of celebrities, dressed to the nines in head-turning and headline-grabbing fashion statements. 

This year, though, the Cannes Film Festival has made headlines for issuing a strict dress code, with the objective to minimise fashion drama and promote stylish elegance. From oversized bags to voluminous clothing, many new rules have been introduced this year. However, one thing that the Cannes fashion police are very strict about is that guests must wear clothes with no shock value. So, no sheer or almost n**ked outfits are allowed. 

Cannes 2025 says absolutely no to nude dresses and sheer gowns, guests must wear clothes 

Since the Cannes Film Festival is as much about films as it is about films, many of the celebrity guests turn up to the event in the most headline-worthy dresses. Moreover, sheer dresses have been a trending outfit of choice in many recent events. Model, Bella Hadid and actress, Elle Fanning had been spotted wearing sheer outfits to Cannes 2024. But in 2025, this new fashion trend would not be allowed on the red carpet. An official statement released by the organisers of Cannes 2025, has cited maintaining 'decency' as one of the reasons for these new rules. 

There are speculations that this new guideline might have been introduced following the drama caused by Kanye West's wife, Bianca Censori's almost-naked look for the Annual Grammy Awards. The outfit caused an uproar and made netizens question the line between fashion and provocation. As a result, the Cannes Film Festival has put down guidelines against the recent nude fashion trend. Any guest found flouting the rules will be denied access to the red carpet. 

Voluminous and difficult-to-sit dresses are not allowed at Cannes 2025

Long flowing trains and huge puffy dresses have been a style statement of many female celebrities walking up the Cannes red carpet. With the wide red carpet serving as a fashion ramp, many celebrities wear dresses with flowy long trains that cover up almost half the carpet and stairs. Many celebrities also wear dresses made out of non-fabric materials like metal and glass. These outfits make up for great fashion statements, but the celebrities wearing these costumes can neither walk on the red carpet without assistance nor can they sit down for the film previews. 

 Such outfits have also been banned from the Cannes Film Festival 2025 since they create huge traffic on the red carpet. Many of the celebrities are given a set duration for photo opportunities on the red carpet. All the guests also had to wait in line to walk on the carpet one by one. But with unmanageable outfits like long trains and voluminous gowns, the costumes take up a lot of space, and the red-carpet traffic increases as well. Meanwhile, difficult-to-sit dresses are also difficult to walk around in, so the celebrities wearing them take a lot of time going up the stairs, also creating traffic on the red carpet. 

Big tote bags, oversized handbags and purses are not allowed in Cannes 2025

Cannes 2025 has also banned oversized bags of any kind, whether totes or handbags. Better traffic management has again been cited as a reason for this new rule. Reportedly, huge bags also slow down the natural flow of movement of guests. This again creates issues while managing the traffic on the red carpet. Seating arrangements are also made so guests can sit and view the films. However, large handbags complicate these seating arrangements since they take up a lot of space and can hinder the space of another guest sitting nearby. 

Cannes 2025 is also putting in a lot of effort to make the event more elegant and orderly. Therefore, banning huge bags is also a part of this effort. Guests are allotted lockers to keep their belongings near the place where the film screenings take place. They can bring their essential items to prepare for the red carpet, but they are not allowed to disrupt the event and carry large handbags. 

What can the guests wear to the Cannes 2025? 

With so many new guidelines in place, celebrities' stylists have to work within the framework of the rules. Too much creativity and adding a shock value to the look can prove detrimental and might get the guest kicked out of the event. So the question arises, what kind of outifts are the guests allowed to wear to the film festival. As per an official statement, guests are allowed to wear elegant evening gowns, cocktail dresses, black tie tuxedos and footwear with or without heels. However, many guests have been known to flout rules at the previous Cannes Film Festivals in acts of rebellion. 

In 2015, there were reports that many female guests were denied entry to the film festival because of their footwear of choice, which was flat sandals. They were asked to wear heels to get access to the red carpet. Actresses, Julia Roberts and Kristen Stewart took a stand against this rule and walked the red-carpet barefoot in Cannes 2016 and Cannes 2018, respectively. French musician, DJ Kiddy Smile also wore a gown to Cannes 2019 to promote gender-fluidity and rebel against the Cannes rule that mandated men to wear tuxedo suits. So, it will be interesting to see if any guests break these new rules placed for Cannes 2025.
