Kiran Rao's directorial film, Laapataa Ladies was a super hit, and it was India's official entry in Oscars. However, it failed to win the award, but the movie again made headlines when netizens found similarities between the film and the Arabic short film Burqa Ladies. While the writer of Laapataa Ladies denied the plagiarism, the French director , Fabrice Bracq, expressed his shock and sadness.
Recently, in an interview with IFP, Burqa Ladies' director talked about his film being copied by Bollywood. The director claimed he had not watched the film till the similarities were brought to notice. He further revealed that he noticed the similarities in both films and how the film's storyline matched his short film.
He further added how similarities in the 'kind, loving and naive husband', followed by the 'violent and despicable' husband. The director said:
"There’s also similarity in the plot twist at the end, where we learn that the woman deliberately chose to run away from her abusive husband – a key narrative element in Burqa City."
The director further expressed hurt on finding out the similarities in the two film. He stated that the film has been a huge success in India and was even shortlisted for the Oscars. He said:
"When I found out, I was both shocked and saddened, especially since I understood that the film had been a huge success in India and was even shortlisted for the Oscars. As for me, I had hopes – and was in discussions – to adapt Burqa City into a feature film. But is that even possible now?"
Laapataa Ladies writer, Biplab Gowasmi issued a statement breaking the silence on the matter. He denied the plagiarism claims. He stated that he had registered the film with Screenwriters Association in 2014 and the feature-length script with SWA in 2018 with the title, Two Brides. He said:

A few days ago, a post on Reddit showed glimpses of Fabrice Bracq's 19-minute short film, Burqa City, which was released in 2019. The film is shot in the Middle East and follows the journey of a newlywed man whose wife gets swapped with another woman due to their burqas.
Several users pointed out that Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao's film is a copy of that short film where the ghoonghats were replaced by burqas. Soon, netizens discovered that the film had been copied from another film with a similar plot. It was a 1999 movie titled Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol with a similar storyline by director, Anant Mahadevan.
