'Blue Bloods' Spinoff 'Boston Blue' Expands Its Universe And It's A Continuing Of The Family Drama

Boston Blue premiered on CBS on October 17, 2025, is already leaving viewers hooked with only one episode aired so far. Boston Blue is a spinoff of the American police procedural and family drama, Blue Bloods, that aired from 2010 to 2025. When CBS announced the cancellation of Blue Bloods, it instantly became controversial, given that throughout all these years, the series remained a fan favourite. While the exact reason for the cancellation of Blue Bloods wasn't known, it was said that it was partly due to cost-cutting and partly to refresh CBS's lineup.

Boston Blue is a continuation of Blue Bloods: Here's more about the spin-off

Well, amid this, CBS dropped Boston Blue, a continuation of Blue Bloods, whose ending didn't really wrap up the Reagan family history. Thus, the new series is here to do the same. Before we begin the review, it's worth mentioning that the total number of episodes for season 1 hasn't been disclosed yet. However, it's scheduled to air weekly, with new episodes premiering on Fridays on CBS. Before its US television debut, Boston Blue premiered at the MIPCOM Cannes on October 12, 2025. Donnie Wahlberg (lead) and Bridget Moynahan (guest) reprised their roles as 'Danny Reagan' and 'Erin Reagan', respectively.

Some of the actors, who will be seen in Boston Blue, are Sonequa Martin-Green as 'Lena Silver', Mika Amonsen in the role of 'Sean Reagan', and Marcus Scribner as 'Jonah Silver', among others. While it's not confirmed whether other members of the 'Reagan' family would make an appearance in the spinoff, the spinoff is going to keep the legacy of the family alive, along with bringing a new family, 'The Silvers', who are Boston's law-enforcement royalty.

Reviews of Boston Blue

The first and only aired episode, Faith And Family, began with 'Jonah Silver's and 'Sean Reagan's outing, as they discovered a building was on fire. 'Jonah' and 'Sean' are both Boston rookie cops and new to the force, who rushed in to help and disengage from the fire of the building, only to find out that a woman was already being shot. The surprising fact was that the woman was not killed by the fire, but was shot dead.

Evntually, 'Sean', the son of 'Danny Reagan' got injured and went in coma. After 'Danny' got the news, he moved to Boston from New York, and using his former NYDP badge, he confronted a suspicious bystander and clashed with 'Lena Silver', 'Jonah's sister and Boston's lead detective. Eventually, 'Danny' and 'Lena' got to know each other's family history and collaborated on solving the entire case together. The dead woman was a CEO of a tech company, and as the plot unfolds, it introduces the entire 'Silver' family in the Boston setting, keeping the family drama central, connected to the 'Reagan' family. So, the family legacy got combined with a crime investigation, which set the tone of the spin-off.

Final verdict and audience reviews: Is Boston Blue worth skipping or streaming?

The audience had shared their reviews, and the series had a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5. While some found the series intriguing, most of the viewers called the plot cliched, in agreement with several critics. For the Blue Bloods fans, the spinoff brings a stronger point to binge over, while some fans claimed to have missed the 'Reagans' more, given that the first episode introduced 'Silvers' and remained hooked to unfold the history. Talking about the strength of the series, it has a familiar structure to Blue Bloods, along with the strong performances of the actors, which keep the plot somewhat strong. On the other hand, the weakness is that the plot, although strong, is predictable and feels like it lacks originality, making it cliché for several critics and viewers.
