Love is an overpowering feeling and to be loved by the person we like is a dream come true. We all know that a relationship is not a bed of roses, everyone has their ups and downs in their relationships. But eventually, most of the couples make a truce with their beloved partner. However, it sometimes leads to an abusive relationship when things don't get better.

While many of us look up to Bollywood couples and their fascinating lifestyle, we are not aware of the reality. The reality is far different from what we see. There are a few Bollywood couples whose relationship was once the talk of the town, but it ended on an ugly note. Let’s look at the actresses who went through domestic violence and physical abuse by their partners.

#1. Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai is considered as one of the most beautiful actresses in Bollywood. The Devdas actress comes with a huge fan base and has done some classic Bollywood movies, amongst them are Josh, Mohabbatein, Umrao Jaan, and many more. The actress had also done a movie with her then actor-boyfriend, Salman Khan, which was Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. During that time, Salman and Aishwarya’s relationship was making headlines. Both the actors had dated for a few years, however, they had suddenly parted ways, which had left their fans in a shock!

After their breakup, Aishwarya had revealed that she was in an abusive relationship, as she had endured Salman’s alcoholism and was at the receiving end of his abuses and infidelity. This whole episode took another leap in 2002 when Salman came on the sets of Chalte Chalte. The furious actor reportedly hit Aishwarya and pushed her on the ground, and destroyed the sets. As a result of all this high-end drama, Aishwarya was sacked from the film, and Rani Mukerji was roped in.

The Ek Duuje Ke Liye actress, Rati Agnihotri, was a popular 80s actress. Rati has done several Tamil and Hindi films like Mera Faisla, Ek Dujhe Ke LiyeKrishna Cottage, Socha Na Tha, Singh is Bling and many more. While many of us know about her and her fine acting skills, very few know that she was stuck in an abusive marriage and was subjected to physical violence. The actress got married on February 9, 1985, to Anil Virwani who used to assault her physically and mentally. The abuse had continued for a few years, and in 2015, when she had reached a point where she could not tolerate the abuse and mental trauma given by her husband, Anil Virwani, Rati had lodged a complaint against him for domestic violence.

The actress had once revealed why she took so long to speak up against the abuse was because of her son Tanuj Virwani. He was the reason she had put up with all the pain for 30 years. However, she had reached her threshold, she thought she will progressively grow older and weaker and then one day she will eventually die or be beaten to death. This is what motivated her to step out of her toxic marriage.

The actress is the daughter of the Kapoor clan and is much known by the name Lolo. Karisma has remained one of the most beautiful actresses of her time. She had featured in Bollywood’s box office hit movies like Dil To Pagal Hai, Hum Saath-Saath Hai, Biwi no.1, Judwaa, and Andaz Apna Apna. Karisma sought great success in less time. Karishma had tied the nuptial knot with an industrialist, Sanjay Kapur, in 2003. It was during that time when she was extremely successful in the film industry. After being married for 13 years with Sanjay, the actress had filed for a divorce in 2014.

The reason she had stated for separation from her husband was shocking. She had said that her husband, Sanjay Kapur and his family had physically and mentally tortured her. In her divorce plea, Karisma had alleged that Sanjay would abuse her physically and had even asked his mother to slap her once. After long legal proceedings, Karisma Kapoor had got the custody of their kids Samaira and Kiaan. The children now stay with their mother, Karisma, in Mumbai.

Kangana Ranaut is an astounding actress. She is known for her superb acting and bold attitude. Kangana Ranaut is amongst those celebrities who have made their name in the entertainment world with their hard work and strong dedication. However, even she was a victim of abuse. Kangana Ranaut and Aditya Pancholi were in a live-in relationship over a decade ago. Back then, Kangana was a budding starlet and Aditya Pancholi was married to Zarina Wahab.

She had once confessed about the horrors of abuse by Aditya Pancholi. During one such event, Kangana had revealed how Aditya would keep her under house arrest, leaving her with no option but to jump out of her first-floor window to escape him. Although, Aditya Pancholi had denied these allegations.

The sensational actress, Jiah Khan had made her debut in Bollywood in the year 2007. She had starred in the movie, Nishabd opposite Amitabh Bachchan. Apart from this, she had worked in two popular movies, Ghajini and Housefull. The young actress had committed suicide at the age of 25, on June 3, 2013. She was found hanging from her bedroom’s ceiling fan in her family’s residence in Juhu, Mumbai. Jiah’s suicide had hit the headlines like a wildfire. The Central Bureau of Investigation was involved in the case as Jiah’s mother held her boyfriend, Sooraj Pancholi, accountable for her daughter’s death.

She had accused him of physically abusing her daughter at multiple events. Many WhatsApp chats between Jiah Khan and Suraj Pancholi had surfaced on the internet, proving Suraj’s abusive nature. In 2018, a court in Mumbai had charged Sooraj Pancholi with abetting Jia’s suicide. Since then, the case has not been settled.

#6. Pooja Bhatt

Born into the Bhatt family, Pooja Bhatt is the daughter of famous Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and his wife, Kiran Bhatt. Talking about Pooja Bhatt’s family, she has a brother, Rahul Bhatt and two half-sisters, actress, Alia Bhatt and writer, Shaheen Bhatt born to her stepmother, Soni Razdan. Pooja Bhatt is herself an acclaimed film-maker and director, just like her father. Apart from it, she has also acted in a few films. She had played her first leading role in Mahesh Bhatt's film, Daddy, in 1989. Coming from a wealthy family and being a successful film director, Pooja Bhatt has all the luxuries and comfort in her life. However, she did not find the same in her love life.

Before getting married to her ex-husband, Manish Makhija, in 2003, Pooja Bhatt was in a live-in relationship with her actor-boyfriend, Ranvir Shorey. Pooja and Ranvir were great friends, and their friendship had turned into love eventually. The duo had dated for quite some time but later broke off. According to Pooja, the reason behind their breakup was his abusive and violent behaviour towards her. Ranvir was an alcoholic, and after drinking too much, he would often beat Pooja. This is why she had decided not to be with him anymore, and eventually, they had broken up.

#7. Zeenat Aman 

Zeenat Aman was the first woman in India who had won the Miss Asia Pacific title in 1970. She was a bold 70’s Bollywood actress who was ahead of her time. Zeenat Aman had become famous through her bold hippie look in the song, Dum Maro Dum, from the movie, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and was considered a sensational actress of the 70’s. She was a successful actress, although she did not succeed in her love life. Zeenat’s married life was unfortunately far from perfect. In 1978 she got married to an already married man named Sanjay Khan.

However, their marriage ended on a terrible note. Just a year later, she filed for a divorce due to his abusive nature. There were reports that Sanjay brutally thrashed Zeenat in front of his wife in hotel Taj. This had left a permanent scar on her eye and had gone into a state of shock for which she had to be injected with anti-depressants three times a day. Later, she married Mazhar Khan, who had also harassed her physically.

We respect all these actresses who stood up against their abusive partners and decided to come out of a toxic relationship and marriage.
