Bhagyashree had become a star overnight with her first film, Maine Pyaar Kiya. She had won a million hearts with the portrayal of a shy girl opposite Salman Khan. Nearly everyone was in awe of her sheer beauty, and she became the dream girl of her fans. But, even after the success of the film and her superstardom overnight, Bhagyashree left Bollywood to have a family.
Yes, the actress decided to leave everything behind because she was in love and wanted to be with the man of her dreams, Himalaya Dassani, forever. She got married to Himalaya Dassani in 1990, and the couple is doting parents to Abhimanyu Dassani and Avantika Dassani. The actress once revealed that her father-in-law badly scolded her for telling her husband that she was missing him. Read on to know the whole story.
Bhagyashree and Himalaya Dassani were high-school sweethearts and were head-over-heels in love with each other. After their marriage, he went to Chennai to set up his business. Bhagyashree was pregnant at that time and missed Himalaya’s presence. In an interview with Hauterrfly, Bhagyashree revealed since there were no phones at that time, her husband called the landline to talk to her.
Hearing Himalya’s voice, Bhagyashree couldn’t control her emotions and told him that she was missing him. Her father-in-law, who was sitting nearby in the same living room, didn’t like what she said to her husband and scolded her. Narrating the same, Bhagyashree revealed:
“Jaise maine phone Rakha mere father-in-law ne data mujhe. Bole wo wahaan pe kya khelne ke liye gaya hai? Missing you bologe to waapis phir bhaag ke aane ki ichcha hogi. Maine socha hai ram, I love you nahi bol sakte, missing you nahi bol sakte. Fir karoon kya? So after that day, I used to write him a letter every day.”
Bhagyashree belongs to a royal Marathi family. She is from Patwardhan, the royal Marathi family of Sangli, and her father is the Raja of Sangli. But when her parents got to know about her affair, they were strictly against it as they thought she was too young to decide what was right for her. Bhagyashree broke up with Himalaya for a brief period for the sake of her family. Soon, Himalaya went to the US for higher studies, and she signed up for her debut film, Maine Pyaar Kiya.
When Himalaya came back from the States, she again tried to convince her parents and told them she could not live without Himalaya, but they paid no heed to it. They were still very adamant, and Bhagyashree realised that she had no other choice than eloping with Himalaya. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Bhagyashree recalled eloping with Himalaya and said:
“I called him up after this conversation and asked him, ‘are you sure of yourself, of us? This is the deciding day…either I’d be in his life forever or not at all.’ I said, ‘I’m leaving my house now, if you love me come and pick me up’ and within 15 minutes he was under my house. We had a small ceremony at a temple — his parents, Salman, Sooraj ji, a few of our friends attended and that’s how we go married.”
In 1990, Bhagyashree tied the knot with the love of her life, Himalaya. After which, her first film, Maine Pyaar Kiya Hai, was released, and she became an overnight star. She was madly in love with Himalaya and embraced motherhood with the arrival of her son, Abhimanyu. After her debut, Bhagyashree got many offers, but her priorities were set as she left Bollywood to be a homemaker, and she has no regrets about it.
Bhagyashree is an inspiration to many women, who left everything behind for the man she loved.
