Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, passed away on January 28, 2026, in an untimely plane crash. He was flying from Mumbai to Baramati in a chartered aircraft when it lost control during the landing. Ajit, along with his personal security officer, Vidip Dilip Jadhav, a flight attendant, Pinky Mali, Captain Sumit Kapoor and First Officer, Shambhavi Pathak, lost their lives in the tragic plane accident. Eyewitnesses at Baramati revealed that the crash was so extreme that all the bodies were badly charred, and immediate identification was tough. However, was Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar's body identified by his wristwatch and sitting position?
Eyewitnesses at Baramati shared that they heard around four to five explosions and saw a thick black of smoke in the sky. The aircraft was completely gutted, which made it difficult to identify the bodies. However, a report by the Times of India revealed that Ajit's body was identified via a wristwatch he was known to wear regularly. The watch was Ajit's constant companion, and the deceased Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra was known for his punctuality. Sandeep Singh Gill, superintendent of police in Pune Rural, shared:
"Our team inspected all the bodies recovered from the crash site and identified the deputy chief minister's body by studying his wristwatch. The police personnel were familiar with it."

Sandeep Singh Gill, superintendent of police in Pune Rural, further shared that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, was known to take a special seat on such aircraft. After studying the position of the body where it was found after the crash, their team confirmed that it was Ajit's body. Samples from his body were then taken for the DNA test. Apart from Ajit Pawar's watch, the police were familiar with his special seat, which the late NCP leader usually occupied on chartered flights, making the identification task a bit easier. Another report by News18 Hindi mentioned that the relatives of the deceased victims were told to provide DNA samples because of the conditions of the charred bodies. However, the identification of the bodies was done via the personal belongings that were found on the site.

The last rites of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, were performed with full state honours at Vidya Pratishthan ground located in Baramati. Ajit Pawar's sons had lit the funeral pyre, followed all the last rites rituals. Present were Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari and Nationalist Congress Party chief, Sharad Pawar, among others. Ajit Pawar's supporters had gathered and chanted, 'Ajit Dada Amar Rahe' and bid the influential leader a farewell.

The sudden, untimely demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar has left a void in Maharashtra politics. The aircraft that carried him was airborne for more than 30 minutes before it crashed, killing all five on board. Reportedly, a clip on January 28, 2026, went viral where a person had pointed towards the wristwatch of a charred body and claimed that the deceased person was Ajit Pawar.
