Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States, was the first African American President. He previously served as a U.S. senator and later served as the President for two successful terms from 2009 to 2017. However, the name that garnered the most attention throughout his political tenure is his wife, Michelle Obama.
Apart from being one of the most loved political figures, Barack and Michelle are known for their love for each other. The couple, who met at a law firm, have been together for 32 years and are parents to two beautiful daughters, Malia Ann Obama and Sasha Obama. However, there have been rumours of late about the couple’s divorce.
Rumours of Barack and Michelle’s divorce received a lot of attention when he announced that he would attend Donald Trump's inauguration without his wife, Michelle Obama. However, the duo rubbished the rumours and stated that all is well between them. As they are leading the headlines with their relationship status, let's read on to learn more about how they fell in love.
In 1988, Barack Obama took a summer job at the law firm of Sidley and Austin in Chicago. Michelle also worked at Sidley and was assigned as Barack’s mentor. Barack, who was 28 at that time, was completely smitten by Michelle, who was 25. In an interview with The Oprah Magazine, Barack recalled the same and said:
“In the luckiest break of my life, [Michelle] was assigned to be my adviser. I remember being struck by how tall and beautiful she was.”
A month into the law firm, Barack asked Michelle out on a date, and she refused, thinking it would look inappropriate for a mentor. After a lot of convincing, she agreed to go on a date with him. Though Barack showed up in a Datsun with a “rusted-out, four-inch hole”, the date went pretty well.

From a lunch at the Art Institute of Chicago, Baskin-Robbins ice cream in Hyde Park, seeing the Spike Lee movie Do The Right Thing, followed by their first kiss, everything was just perfect. Little did Barack know that his summer job would give him the love of his life.
In 1991, Barack hosted a dinner to celebrate his passing the bar exam. He was all set to propose to Michelle when he thought of a prank. The young Barack told Michelle that he didn't believe in the concept of marriage and didn’t think there was any need to get married. While Michelle was arguing with Barack over the same when she got the biggest surprise of her life. Recalling the same, Michelle told ABC News:
“And then the waiter came over with the dessert and a tray. And there was the ring.”
Barack and Michelle got married on October 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. They welcomed their first child, Malia, on July 4, 1998, and their second daughter, Sasha, on June 10, 2001.
In 2025, rumours started hitting the headlines that Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were parting ways. The speculation intensified after Michelle was conspicuously absent from several public events, including Donald Trump's inauguration in January 2025. A statement from the office of Barack and Michelle Obama revealed that the former president would be arriving alone to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremony.
In July 2025, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama addressed divorce speculation when they appeared on Michelle's podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. In the conversation, Barack Obama admitted that he was clueless about the rumours until someone mentioned them to him. Putting an end to the rumours, Michelle stated:
“I have never considered leaving my partner at any point during our marriage. My spouse has helped me grow as a person, and we have experienced many adventures and good times in addition to some really difficult times."
