Famous American actor, James Tolkan passed away at the age of 94. Being discharged from the U.S. Navy and having only USD 75 in his pocket, he came to New York, and eventually, he established himself as one of the well-known faces of the glamour world, whose career spanned five decades. Over the years, James Tolkan took part in several projects, and his demise sparked a sense of grief among his fans.
Tolkan's death was confirmed by a family spokesperson and also by Bob Gale, who, along with director Robert Zemeckis, created the BTTF franchise. It was reported that James Tolkan passed away peacefully in Saranac Lake, New York. He was 94 years old, and the reason for his death has not been officially disclosed. As James Tolkan passed away, his fans have been mourning the loss.
James Tolkan was born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, to Dale Nichols and Ralph M. Tolkan, a cattle dealer. Reportedly, he had to cycle through Chicago, and finally ended up in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated from Amphitheatre High School. In his high school, Tolkan used to play football, and with the scholarship, he got admitted to Eastern Arizona College.
However, he soon had to leave as he had to take part in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, as reported. If the reports are to be believed, Tolkan was discharged from the U.S Navy later, as he had a certain heart condition. Following his discharge, he completed his graduation with a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Drama. He had only USD 75 in his pocket when he moved to New York and started studying at The Actors Studio.
James Tolkan made his debut in 1960 with ABC's Naked City, wherein he appeared in only one episode. In 1966, he was seen as 'Harry Roat' in the original Broadway production of Wait Until Dark. He was also seen in NBC’s Remington Steele, wherein he played the role of 'Norman Keyes', apart from that, he was also seen as several characters through 21 instalments of A&E’s A Nero Wolfe Mystery. He was seen in Woody Allen's Love and Death, following which he was also a part of Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy.

James Tolkan was seen in several movies like Serpico, Love and Death, Prince of the City, Top Gun, Masters of the Universe, Dick Tracy, and Problem Child 2. He had credit in other movies as well, including The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Amityville Horror, Wolfen, WarGames, Masters of the Universe, True Blood and Opportunity Knocks.
Tolkan was best known for his role as Hill Valley High School principal, 'Mr. Strickland' in Back To The Future, which made him stand out and established him as one of the well-known actors of his time. He was also a part of the two sequels to the BTTF franchise. He was also famous for his role in Top Gun, which also starred Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan and more. James Tolkan played the role of 'Commander Tom Jardian', aka 'Stringer', in the film.
Yes! James Tolkan was married. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee. The couple got married in 1971 in Lake Placid, however, it's not known whether they had any kids. James and Parmelee met in 1971 on the sets of Pinkville, an off-Broadway play. While James was an actor in Pinkville, Pramelee was working as a prop girl. Pramelee, back then, was working as a costume and scenery painter at the American Place Theatre.
