Divya Bharti was one of the most talented actors back in the 90s. She made her debut at a young age of 14 years, and went on to achieve massive stardom within a very short period of time. She captivated audiences with her terrific acting chops and absolutely beautiful doll-like looks. However, destiny had other plans and due to a tragic accident, where she fell from the balcony of her fifth-floor apartment, Divya bid adieu to the world in 1993, at the age of 19. While she may not have been with us anymore, it is some of her iconic films like Vishwatma, Dil Ka Kya Kasoor, Shola Aur Shabnam, Deewana which continue to keep her legacy alive even today.
After her sudden death in 1993, Divya Bharti couldn’t see the future of many of her films, which she shot earlier, and those were released posthumously. One such film was Rang. In an interaction with BBC, late Divya Bharti’s co-star from the film, Ayesha Jhulka recalled a rather bizarre incident that occurred during the trial screening of the film. Ayesha remembered that many people had attended the trial, in fond memory of Divya. However, right at the moment when Ayesha’s entry scene in the film was played, suddenly, due to an electric shock, sparks came out, and the whole screen came down rambling. Thereafter, since the reasons for such an incident were unexplainable, many considered it a bad omen for the film.

Another of Divya Bharti’s posthumous releases was the 1994-film, Laadla. Incidentally, Divya couldn’t complete the shoot of the film, and so after her demise, it was Sridevi who was roped in to play her part entirely from the beginning. However, another such unexplainable incident took place, which froze Sridevi from performing her lines perfectly. According to many reports back in the day, there was a certain dialogue in the film that Divya Bharti used to fumble at during her shooting. Surprisingly, when Sridevi re-shot the same scene and dialogue, she too began to fumble on the same lines. This shocked the other co-stars, who suggested Sridevi to chant the holy Gayatri Mantra only post which the latter could complete her shoot.

In one of her older interviews with Bollywood Bubble, Ayesha Jhulka had opened up about the kind of equation she shared with her contemporaries, Divya Bharti and Mamta Kulkarni. She cited the reasons were obviously out of jealousy and a certain sting of insecurity. Nevertheless, she added that at the end of the day, they would come back with one another, and in fact, shared some really good friendships together. In her words:

“If I would work with Mamta (Kulkarni), or Divya Bharti or anyone, we were just two of us. Two women with two co-actors, and we would have really good equations. Of course, little bit here and there… I think when we are younger and we have those insecurities. Of course, there were. Jealousy happens. Now it depends that my jealousy, if at all it was there, has now converted into envy. And I feel that sometimes this kind of thing is healthy also.”
