Atul Subhash's suicide case shook the country and became a major issue of discussion towards the end of 2024. After the 34-year-old techie in Bengaluru took his life, the lack of legal support for men in comparison to women has become a concern in society. His estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family were later accused and arrested. Since they have gotten bail, the issue of Atul and Nikita's son's custody has been consistently making headlines, and the court has now pronounced its decision.
Atul Subhash and Nikita Singhania married in 2019 and welcomed a son in 2020. After Atul's death, his mother, Anju Devi, took legal action and claimed that her now-accused daughter-in-law was not sharing details about her and Atul's 4-year-old son. Consequently, the court took action and began hearing on the case.
Recently, in January 2025, the Supreme Bench comprising Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma finally pronounced their decision in the case. In the hearing, they asked to see the child, and after a break of 45 minutes, he appeared on a video link. The case's hearing went offline to protect his identity. The count allowed Nikita Singhania to retain the custody of her son and dismissed Anju Devi's plea.
When Anju Devi moved to court to know about her grandson and seek his guardianship, when Nikita first mentioned he was with her uncle who denied it. The court sought the responses from the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Karnataka in the matter and asked them to find details about his location. Later, they also noted that since his birth, the 4-year-old has hardly spent time with his grandparents. Sharing her views on it, Justice Nagarathna mentioned:
"Sorry to say the child is a stranger to the petitioner."
The court also emphasised that the charges against Nikita against aren't proved yet. So, they can't decide the case's decision based on a media trial. Nikita's lawyer stated that the boy was a student at a boarding school in Haryana's Faridabad and was present during his mother's arrest. But, he has been taken out to ensure he can live with his mother in Bengaluru, where Nikita is staying to fulfill her bail conditions.

Atul Subhash was a 34-year-old software engineer who lived in Bengaluru. He took his lif and blamed his estranged wife, Nikita Singhania, and her family for it in an 81-minute video and a 24-page suicide note before it. Atul elaborated that Nikita and her family filed false cases against him and his parents to seek Rs 3 crore from him amid their divorce proceedings under the pretext of alimony and child custody. It caused an uproar among public and Nikita and her brother were booked for her abetment of suicide case. But, they are out on bail.
