Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 84. His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium. The veteran actor has been part of the industry for over five decades and he is known for his impeccable comic timing and expressive performances, he appeared in over 350 films. Asrani’s last film, Haiwaan with Akshay Kumar was his last project and Akshay Kumar is heartbroken after the death of Asrani.
Asrani, died on Monday October 20, 2025 after a prolonged illness. Akshay Kumar and the veteran actor Asrani have starred together in a number of films, with many of them being popular comedies including Bhool Bhulaiaya, Welcome, Bhagam Bhag, Deewane Huye Paagal, Hera Pheri, and Khatta Meetha. Asrani will appear alongside Akshay Kumar in two films directed by Priyadarshan Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan. Following news of his death, Akshay wrote:
“Bahot pyare insaan the he had the most legendary comic timing. From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan…I had worked and learned so much from him. What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you Asrani Sir, for giving us a million reasons to laugh. Om Shanti.”
Akshay Kumar also shared picture with Asrani in his post, where the late actor is seen riding a scooty with Akshay sitting behind him. Both the actors were seen smiling and the photo appears to be a part of their upcoming film.
Asrani’s manager, Baby Bhai Thiba, confirmed news of his death and told ANI, “Asrani passed away today at 3 pm at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu.” Asrani’s family also shared a statement which read, the one who brought smiles to everyone faces, is no longer among us. It was captioned as:
Our beloved, the one who brought smiles to everyone’s faces, Asrani ji is no longer among us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both Hindi cinema and our hearts. The indelible mark he left through his performances will remain eternal. May God grant peace to his soul. Om Shanti.”
Govardhan Asrani, known as Asrani was born in Jaipur on January 1, 1941. He completed his education and began his career at All India Radio as a voice over artist. He encountered with filmmaker, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, from where he graduated in 1966. He appeared in brief roles in films like Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain, Hare Kanch Ki Chooriyan, Umang, and Satyakam, but he strugged to get opportunities.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who taught Asrani as guest faculty at FTII, reached out to Asrani on Gulzar’s recommendation. Asrani introduced Hrishikesh to Jaya, who was also Asrani’s student. Jaya Bhaduri was casted for the film and Asrani too auditioned, and landed the role of an aspiring actor in Guddi. The film went on to become a hit, and both came into spotlight. The actor was popularly known for his comedy roles in Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, Roti, Prem Nagar, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, Rafoo Chakkar, Sholay, Balika Badhu, Fakira, Anurodh, Chhailla Babu, Charas, Phaansi, Dillagi, Heeralal Pannalal, Pati Patni Aur Woh and Hamare Tumhare.
Asrani, in an interview with Bollywood Tehlka, once opened that he was just roaming around with his certificate and director’s used to shoo him away. For two years he was just struggling to find work until, one day Indra Gandhi once came to Pune. He further told, "we complained to her and told that despite having a certificate nobody wants to hire us." Then she came to Mumbai and told producers that they should hire them. After that, work started coming in. He got his first break in Guddi with Jaya Bhaduri which became a hit.
