Asha Bhosle, one of the melodious voices of the '80s, and the sister of the late Lata Mangeshkar, passed away on April 12, 2026. Her life was no less than a film's tale, from eloping with a 15-year-older man to facing life's harshest blow after three children, Asha has been through a lot. However, just a month before her death, Asha Bhosle seemed to have understood the true meaning of life as she shared a post on moksha.

Asha Bhosle wanted to attain moksha, a feeling she got after visiting Varanasi in March 2026

Just a month before her death, Asha Bhosle shared her thoughts on moksha in her last post. On March 18, 2026, Asha Bhosle shared a collaborative post with Gorillaz, which launched her as a new-age singer with the song, The Shadowy Light. A glimpse of the album was shared on Instagram. Along with a note by Asha Bhosle, which talked about her visit to Varanasi, and why she chose to sing The Shadowy Light.

Asha Bhosle revealed that it held a deepening meaning for her. When she visited Varanasi, she saw the sacred river Ganga, and that's when she understood the meaning of life, who she was, and what her life purpose was on earth. She stated that in the song, she crosses the deep rifer which was about her life journey. It talked about Asha's birth, her relationships, her love for music, and her achievements. She wrote:

"Te song ‘The Shadowy Light’ holds deep meaning for me. Visiting Varanasi and travelling along the most sacred river Ganges, observing closely what I saw, I understood the meaning of life, who I was and what I was supposed to do on earth.
On ‘The Shadowy Light’, my crossing this deep river signifies my life’s journey… my birth, my relationships, my dedication to music, my achievements and my duties as a daughter, mother, sister, wife and a Hindu Indian."

Asha Bhosle further expressed her wish to attain moksha, which is ultimate freedom, and become one of the thousands of sounds floating around the world. She expressed how she wanted to become a musical note in a beautiful song which shall be heard over several generations. She wanted to become one with nature, and this is what awaits her on the other side of the river. She wrote:

"The boatman is my music, my guide across this river of life and when I get to the other side, my journey shall be complete. I shall attain moksha (ultimate freedom) wherein I shall become one of the thousands of sounds floating all around us. If you put some of them together, they form a beautiful tune. Therefore, I shall become one of those sounds, which shall eventually become a musical note in a beautiful song which shall be heard by several generations for thousands of years. This freedom to become one with nature is what awaits me on the other side of the river. - Asha Bhosle."

For the unversed, Asha Bhosle had recorded her portions of the song from her home in South Mumbai. Now, how life has unfolded for the Bhosle family, it is worth mentioning that Albarn played an old harmonium, which was associated with Asha Bhosle's second husband, R.D.
