Asha Bhosle's singing has defined a whole era of music in the Hindi film industry. Despite being the sister of Lata Mangeshkar, she carved a strong identity by lending her voice to hit songs like Le Gaye, Sharara, Radha Kaise Na Jale, Yeh Vaada Raha, Sapne Mein and more. In her personal life, the singer married the love of her life and music director, R.D. Burman. They tied the knot in 1980 and gave several memorable hits until R.D. Burman died in 1994. In a recent interview, Asha Bhosle recalled her bond with her late husband, R.D. Burman and shared anecdotes about his grounded nature.
Asha Bhosle recently sat down for a conversation on Couple of Things with RJ Anmol and Amrita Rao. During her conversation, she shared some interesting anecdotes on the show about her late husband and music director, R.D. Burman. The singer mentioned that despite having delivered some of the most popular songs, her husband always had a grounded nature and never took his success for granted. In her words:
"He didn't even know that he was such a big music director. He made music, but he had no ego about it. People die for money, but if I gave him a diamond, he would say, 'What is this? A stone? Instead, get a good song recorded.' That record was more valuable to him than a diamond."
Asha also mentioned that she and R.D. Burman had an endearing way of calling each other with nicknames that spoke volumes about their love. She revealed that she earlier used to call her husband, 'Pancham', his popular nickname in the industry. Later, she sang a song, Babua, and he began to use that word to address her. However, gradually, she made him shorten it to 'Bab'. But, despite their affectionate nicknames, he used to address her by her name in front of people and colleagues. Recalling his memories, she said:
"In the studio, with a music director present, it's easier. But now, he's not there. On stage, emotions take over. The throat chokes, and the voice trembles. Memories come flooding back—those nights, those letters, those roses by the pillow. The audience connects too, reliving their own past."
In the same interview, Asha shared that most of her wishes have been fulfilled in life. As a mother, she is happy to witness her children doing well. As a grandmother, she has seen her grandchildren happy. However, now, at 91, she has only one wish. Sharing her biggest wish, Asha said:
"My only wish now is to die while I'm still singing. There's nothing left to learn for me. I've sung my whole life. I started learning classical music at three. It has been 82 years of playback singing. Aur abhi jake ye ichchha hai ke gaate gaate mera dum nikle. That would make me the happiest. I can't live without singing."
Asha Bhosle and R.D. Burman tied the knot in 1980. They both got married for the second time and in an interview with Quint, Asha revealed that he pursued her as R.D.Burman was impressed with her voice, so she agreed to marry him. They recorded songs for films like Ijaazat, Saagar, and more and worked together on popular Bengali songs. However, in the late 1980s, they began to live separately due to R.D. Burman's lifestyle, yet they had a loving relationship and immense respect for each other.
