Archana Puran Singh shares a warm camaraderie with Kapil Sharma, having witnessed his rise from a budding comedian on Comedy Circus to a household name. Over the years, their bond has grown stronger through shows like Comedy Nights With Kapil and now Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show. Recently, Archana addressed Kapil’s running joke about her getting paid just to laugh, clarifying it’s all in good humour and part of their long-standing, affectionate on-screen rapport.
For those unaware, a few years ago, during one of his show's segments, Kapil Sharma jokingly remarked that Archana Puran Singh gets paid only to laugh in the show. While it did not initially sit well with the audience, it has now become a recurring gag between the two. The actress addressed the same in one of her recent YouTube vlogs, which have become quite popular now. Archana said that most of Kapil's remarks on his shows are meant for lighthearted banter and jokes that pack a punch, but people tend to take them seriously. In her words:
“Now it’s become a joke. Kapil makes jokes about everything, people take it seriously. I don’t because I know the name of the game is make a punch, get a laugh out of it, and move on.”
Archana further clarified that she is not even sure of her role in Kapil's shows, as she only has to be a celebrity guest who sits in the chair and watches the show. Recalling her judgment days in Comedy Circus when she used to assess the comedic talent of various participants, Archana remarked that now, too, she gets paid to judge a comedy show as the celebrity guest in Kapil's shows. Citing her natural tendency to laugh even off-screen, Archana said in her vlog:
“Yes, I am paid to judge a comedy show, which is what I initially started doing with Comedy Circus. Now, I am paid to not judge Kapil’s show, but be a celebrity guest. I don’t even know what my role is. Kapil only keeps joking. How am I paid to laugh? In a way, I am paid to enjoy the show, and because my enjoyment is very loud and spontaneous, it translates to I am paid to laugh. Then my kids pick up on that and throw similar punches at me. In my vlogs, you see, I am laughing even when I am not paid to do so. It is just a joke. I go along with it because I think it’s very funny.”
Archana Puran Singh has shared the screen with Kapil for years, from her judging days in Comedy Circus to becoming a familiar face on Comedy Nights with Kapil, and now Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show. What began as a judge-contestant relationship has now blossomed into a genuine bond of humour and mutual admiration. Earlier, in a chat with SCREEN, Archana reflected on her journey with Kapil Sharma and shared:
“It was Comedy Circus where Kapil was a contestant like the other ten, our association started then. Who knew that it would carry so far? It was an association built on mutual respect, I was his senior and a judge on the show. From my side, the respect for him grew because I saw amazing talent. Whenever I see that, I bow down to it for being so pure and powerful. I made the same bond with Krushna, Kapil, and it has now evolved into a family relationship.”
