AR Rahman's Mother Asked Him To Discontinue School When He Was 11: 'Thinking What's Going To Happen'

In an interview, AR Rahman and his family members revealed how the singer had to leave his school at a mere age. In addition, his mother revealed how he inherited his father's genes.

AR Rahman's Mother Asked Him To Discontinue School When He Was 11: 'Thinking What's Going To Happen'

AR Rahman is one of the most popular music composers, singers, songwriters and musicians in the Indian music industry. His melodious voice and songs have blessed our ears for a long period of time. Thus, he has etched an unerasable place in millions of hearts worldwide. However, the singer's childhood wasn't a smooth one. Instead, he went through many hardships after losing his father at the age of 9 and started working at 11. Now, he, his mother, Kareema Begum and sister, AR Reihana revealed a few anecdotes about the singer's life, and it's simply unmissable.

AR Rahman’s mother asked him to discontinue his schooling for the family's benefit

In a recently released interview with the O2India, AR Rahman’s late mother, Kareema Begum was heard revealing how she asked him to leave his schooling and work as a musician. In her words, “He always argued with me that he could either study or work as a session musician. For us to survive, he had to earn. Thus, I asked him to continue with music and discontinue his schooling.” To this, his sister, AR Reihana was also heard mentioning that although Rahman wasn't good at studies, he did not want to leave school. AR Reihana said:

“Even though he is not very good at studies and he wanted to go to school but my mother insisted that he goes and plays because she needed the money to run the family so that was very heart breaking situation.”

AR Rahman said he was half-hearted when his mother asked him to leave school

In the same conversation, AR Rahman also opened up about the life-changing decision of leaving school and taking up the entire responsibility of his family on his shoulders. The thought indeed shook the 11-year-old boy at that time, and now he revealed how he had become half-hearted when his mother asked him to leave school. Rahman added:

“It was a very difficult decision where I was half-heartedly leaving my school campus and thinking what’s going to happen to me?”

AR Rahman’s mother was in tears when she heard his first film composition

AR Rahman started working at the age of 11, as a music composer. Initially, he gathered some money to rent a studio space. However, he was left with no more money than to buy the equipment. Thus, his later mother had then given him some more money for his first mixer and recorder that was used in the studio. He used this to compose his first film song, Chinna Chinna Asai from Roja. And upon listening to it, his mother was in tears. Revealing it, AR Rahman's mother said:

“I cried when I listened to the song for the first time. It was his first composition for a feature film, I was moved.”

Further, in the same conversation, AR Rahman's mother recalled how he was improving his father’s compositions as a young boy. For the unversed, AR Rahman’s father, RK Shekar was also a music composer. In his mother's words:

“He used to listen to his father’s music and tried to play the same music. At times, he even changed the tune. His father used to wonder how could a small child change the tune. Later, he would use the tune revised by his son.”
