AR Rahman On Financial Struggling Days: Reveals Mom Had To Sold Jewellery To Buy His First Recorder

Oscar and Grammy Award winner, AR Rahman needs no introduction. He recently enchanted many minds with his music in Imtiaz Ali's directorial, Amar Singh Chamkila, which was released on Netflix on April 12, 2024. The film was based on the late Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila's life. Apart from the cast's acting skills or story plot, it was the songs that got huge recognition amongst the masses. The film's music is composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil.

AR Rahman reveals his mom sold her jewelry to support him in his financial struggles

Thus, in a recent conversation with the team of Amar Singh Chamkila, including director, Imtiaz Ali, singer, Mohit Chauhan, and lyricist, Irshad Kamil, AR Rahman walked down the memory lane. For the uninitiated, AR Rahman also had a fair share of struggles at the beginning of his career. And his journey to such a height is indeed inspirational. Now, in the interview, the music maestro revealed how he lacked money while building his studio. He was even unable to buy the equipment required for the same.

Further, talking about his personal hardships, AR Rahman recalled that his family helped him during his struggling days. He mentioned that his first recorder came when his mother sold her jewellery. Calling it a moment of empowerment, the musician mentioned that it was the turning point of his life. Since then, he has never looked behind and has kept making soulful music one after the other. He said:

“When I built my studio, I didn’t have money to buy an amplifier or equaliser. There was just an AC with a shelf and carpet. I used to be sitting there not having money to buy anything. I built this and was sitting inside with no equipment. My first recorder came after my mom gave her jewels to be pledged. That is when I felt empowered. I could see my future, that one moment I changed.”

AR Rahman revealed that he didn’t go to college, and that was when he found interest in music

In the same conversation, AR Rahman mentioned that he never attended college. However, by the time he got there, he felt that something was missing in his life. Undoubtedly, in this way, he found his solace in music, and thankfully, the generation got one of the legendary musicians. Then, the musician began getting exposed to music as a child, which helped him explore the spectacular side of him. He added:

“When I was 12, I was vibing with people in their 40s and 50s. My boredom led me to listen to many other things, to explore what was there on the other side. That side was spectacular for me. There was so much out there."

Irshad Kamil once revealed how AR Rahman kept him hostage until 2 a.m. for a romantic track of Amar Singh Chamkila

AR Rahman's dedication to his professional field is known to all. Earlier, in an interview with News18, Irshad Kamil revealed an unknown anecdote from the shoot of the film, Amar Singh Chamkila, from which he learned about AR Rahman's love and dedication to music. He shared that AR Rahman held him hostage until 2 a.m. for the romantic track of the film, Tu Kya Jaane. The song is sung by Yashika Sikka, and Irshad wrote the lyrics. Irshad elaborated that the ace composer was adamant that he would not let Irshad go until he wrote a line or two of the romantic track. Irshad shared:

“We had finalised a different song before ‘Tu Kya Jaane’. But after some deliberations, it was felt that the song wasn’t appropriate for the scene in question. It was then that Rahman composed ‘Tu Kya Jaane’. But there’s a funny story behind it. I had gone to meet him for a different reason, and it was well past midnight. He told me to wait. He said, ‘I won’t let you leave before you give me a line or two for the new song’.”
