Anurag Kashyap Couldn't Afford Daughter, Aaliyah's Wedding, Here's How Vijay Sethupathi Helped Him

Anurag Kashyap is a prominent filmmaker-actor in India who is known for his work in Hindi and Tamil films. Known for his blunt views and straightforward attitude, he celebrated a joyous occasion in December 2025, after his only daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, tied the knot with her longtime beau, Shane Gregoire. Anurag, who often comes across as a strong man was seen shedding tears to watch his only child enter the new stage of her life. He didn't share much about the big day but in a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that he wasn't able to fund his daughter's wedding until South Indian superstar, Vijay Sethupathi stepped in. Here's why.

Anurag Kashyap reveals Vijay Sethupathi assured to help him fund Aaliyah's wedding 

Anurag Kashyap recently created a stir after he slammed Bollywood and its practices before shifting to the South to work in the South Indian film industry. He recently sat down for an interview with The Huddle by The Hindu where he shared an interesting anecdote about his experience of working in south films as an actor. He shared that he once met renowned actor, Vijay Sethupathi during the post-production work of his film, Kennedy, who offered him an interesting script. Recalling the meeting, Anurag said:

"After Imaikka Nodigal, I turned down a lot of South films. Offers kept coming every other day. Then, during post-production for Kennedy, I kept bumping into Vijay Sethupathi at my neighbour's place. He told me there's this amazing script they've been trying to get to me. I initially said no. But he helped me find something in Kennedy, so I gave him a 'Thank You' card in the film."

Anurag continued that during his conversation with Vijay Sethupathi, he mentioned that he was planning for his daughter's wedding in 2024. But he didn't have enough money to fund a beautiful Indian wedding for his only daughter. In turn, Vijay showcased a great gesture and assured him that they would together find a way out. Later, he offered Anurag, a role in his film, Maharaja, which financially helped him. In his words:

"I told him, 'I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don't think I can afford it.' And Vijay said, 'We'll help you.' And that's how the Maharaja happened."

Anurag Kashyap revealed he wanted to walk out from his daughter's wedding

Aaliyah Kashyap tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Shane Gregoire, on December 11, 2024. In an old interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Anurag shared that he cried a lot after his daughter's birth and a similar thing happened at his daughter's wedding. He admitted that he got so emotional that he cried non-stop for 10 days in front of random people. The actor-filmmaker shared that when he watched his daughter taking the vows at her wedding, he got so emotional that he was about to walk out. Recalling the moment, he said:

"At my daughter's wedding, after the varmala and havan was done, I couldn't handle it. I was so overwhelmed and emotional that I wanted to leave the wedding, even before the reception began. And I was going out, but he (pointing to Vikramaditya Motwane) stopped me. He took me out, we went for a long walk, and then we came back."

Aaliyah Kashyap tied the knot with Shane Gregoire in a private ceremony held in Mumbai. Her family and friends joined her on the occasion. Aaliyah chose a blush pink lehenga with matching jewellery, makeup and kept her hair open. The wedding ceremony was followed by a star-studded reception, which was attended by Naga Chaitanya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Abhishek Bachchan, his nephew Agastya Nanda, Suhana Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Bobby Deol.
