Popular director-filmmaker, Anurag Basu has given one after the other superhit films and shows like Murder, Gangster, Life in a… Metro, Barfi!, Ajeeb Dastaan, Kyun Ki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, and many others. Coming to his personal life, he is married to the love of his life, Tani who had helped him greatly in terms of bringing the magic of love into his films with such ease. For instance, the romantic terrace scene in Anurag's blockbuster film, Murder (2004) was inspired by his and Tani's real-life love story.
In 2004, the much-in-love couple, Anurag Basu and Tani Basu had welcomed their first child, Ishana and in 2007, their second daughter, whom they had lovingly named Ahana. Time and again, Anurag and Tani share glimpses of their happy family moments on their respective social media handles and make us believe in true love. Recently, the Ludo director, opened up about his battle with blood cancer and how his positivity and immense support from his father, wife, Tani and other eminent names from the film industry had helped him in fighting the battle as a true warrior.

Anurag Basu was diagnosed with one of the deadliest diseases, blood cancer, in 2004, and the doctors had then said that he had only two weeks left on this Earth. In one of the latest episodes of Unfiltered By Samdish, the popular director opened up about the toughest phase of his life. He mentioned that during that time, Mukesh Bhatt who almost never does a backup by evening, had then asked him to do the same, and this had made him curious that something was wrong. And following this, when he saw his parent's expression, he understood that something was wrong. Though he was not getting any severe symptoms initially, he recalled an incident of him casually going for boozing with Bollywood actor, Emraan Hashmi and others. However, his condition had then started deteriorating and sharing the same he said:
“By evening Mukesh Bhatt asked me to pack up the shoot. You can never expect him to say that. It’s impossible. Later, when I saw my parents’ face in hospital, I got a hint that something was wrong. I felt fine except for some headache and weakness. I even sneaked out of my hospital room for a beer with Emraan Hasmi and others. But my condition started deteriorating rapidly as no medicine was helping.”
Further, in the same conversation, he mentioned that his condition was getting worse day by day, and people had started visiting him frequently. Recalling the incident when Mahesh Bhatt had come to meet him, Anurag said that the former one was shivering upon seeing his bad condition. He mentioned that Anupam Kher had also visited him, and similarly, there were many such people from the industry who had come forward to help him. However, during that time, he had got a reality check about his actual condition. Talking about the same, Anurag added:
“My internal organs were bleeding buckets. People kept coming to donate blood. Bhatt sir came to meet me. He put his hand on my forehead and he was shaking. He’s otherwise a very calm person. Even Anupam Kher came to meet me. Seeing both of them, I realised something is not right. My face was bloated. I was unable to catch my breath. That feeling of suffocation made me get a reality check of my bad condition. Also the way people were panicking around me as no line of treatment was working.”

In the same conversation, Anurag Basu revealed that during his critical period, his parents, Subrato Bose and Deepshikha Bose had stopped meeting him as they were unable to face him, and his father had also ended up getting high blood sugar and pressure. He added that his wife used to get his updates from the news channels' reports. However, mentioning the most significant help from Suniel Dutt, that he could immediately get admitted to Tata Memorial Hospital and start his treatment. He also explained that it was then when he had received new medicines, he started recuperating. Anurag mentioned:
“As soon as I reached Tata Hospital, I was put on ventilator. In fact I wasn’t able to get a bed there. It was Sunil Dutt who got me one. I feel blessed to be a part of the film industry, that I immediately got a bed and treatment. A common man would have struggled. Whoever knew me from television was doing everything they could, sending messages, asking for blood to save me. I don’t even know who all donated blood and platelets for me, whose blood is running in my veins today!”
The popular director, Anurag also mentioned that he had received chemotherapy for some time. However, since he was in need of money for his treatment, so he had gone back to his sets. He revealed that he had shot many Television shows wearing a mask and had even started filming one of his films, Gangster, while his chemotherapy was going on. Talking about the courage that he had accumulated for the same, he said:
“That courage came from my family and my dad. It was more difficult for everyone else around me, than me actually.”
For the unversed, during Anurag's diagnosis, his wife, Tani was seven months pregnant with their daughter, Ishana.
