Anuradha Paudwal SHUTS Buzz That Claimed Sisters, Lata-Asha Sidelined Artists 'These Two Sisters..'

Lata Mangeshkar, the iconic singer popularly known as the 'Nightingale of India', won hearts with her soulful tracks. Her sister, Asha Bhosle, is also a legendary singer. There was a time, when the Mangeshkar sisters ruled the music industry. However, Lata Mangeshkar’s death in 2022, left a huge void that cannot be filled. When the sister duo was at the peak of their careers, there were many speculations that they sidelined rising artists at the time to maintain their long-standing legacy. In a recent interview, the renowned playback singer, best known for her bhajans, discussed this topic and recalled how she replaced Lata Mangeshkar for a tune in Abhimaan.

Anuradha Paudwal recalls the time when she replaced Lata Mangeshkar in the movie, Abhimaan

Anuradha Paudwal recently sat for an interview with BBC Hindi and recalled the time, when she made her entry into Bollywood. She shared that for the film, Abhimaan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri (Jaya Bachchan), S.D. Burman was composing the music. The ace music composer wanted a singer to sing a small stanza for the introductory scene of Jaya, and thus, he conveyed this to Anuradha Paudwal’s husband, Arun Paudwal. Anuradha mentioned that it was her husband, Arun, who introduced her to S.D. Burman. Recalling the old days when she started her musical journey, Anuradha said:

"When Burman sahab was composing the music for Abhimaan (1973), he wanted a small shloka for the introductory scene of Jaya Bachchan. He asked my husband (Arun Paudwal), who was his music arranger, to come up with something, and he did, but while sending the recording to him, he asked me to record it in my voice. The moment he heard my voice, he asked Arun about me and told him that he didn’t need Lata ji for such a small part and that I should sing it, and that’s how things started for me."

Anuradha Paudwal shuts down rumours around Mangeshkar sisters sidelining rising artists

In the same interview, Anuradha also addressed the rumours surrounding the Mangeshkar sisters, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, who were accused of sidelining rising artists to maintain their reign within the music industry. She shared that it would be foolish for people to judge the iconic sister duo because they had a long music career. She mentioned Lata Mangeshkar as her guru and shared how she learnt singing by listening to her albums, particularly those featuring the Bhagavad Gita. She also mentioned Asha Bhosle, who is now 91 years old, still practices singing every day. In her words:

"Lata ji is like my guru, and she will always remain so, and I learnt singing hearing her sing the Bhagavad Gita. The people who think that she was throwing her weight around or pushing people down should try and sing like her. How many people could do what she did with her voice? People have their peaks, and just because these two sisters had such a long career, you can’t undermine them. Even at this age, Asha ji practises every day, and doubting the two of them is extremely foolish."
