Legendary ghazal maestro and Padma Shri recipient, Pankaj Udhas left a deep void in the hearts of countless of his listeners, after his unexpected demise at the age of 72. The news sent a shockwave across the music as well as the entertainment industry, and many remembered the legendary singer with fond anecdotes. And now, Pankaj Udhas’ dear friend, Anup Jalota opened up about the cause of the former’s death.
In a recent interaction with The Indian Express, bhajan samrat, Anup Jalota remembered his dear friend, Anup Jalota, who passed away on February 26, 2024. While the official obituary shared by the late singer’s family didn’t specify what caused the latter’s death, Anup Jalota claimed that Pankaj was suffering from a severe bout of pancreatic cancer since the past few months. Talking more about it, he said:

“The man who helped so many cancer patients, himself died of cancer. That is life. He had pancreatic cancer. I knew this for the last 5 to 6 months, and he stopped talking to me in the last 2-3 months, so I realized that his health was not okay. I feel very sad that this illness took his life.”

While the world mourns the loss of a great music legend, Anup Jalota, on the other hand, states that he is grief stricken after losing one of his best friends, with whom he had been together for almost 45 years. He recalled fond jamming sessions in the evening with the late singer, as they were joined by another of their friend, Talat Aziz. In his words:
“People have lost Pankaj Udhas, but I have lost a very dear friend today. We were friends for 45 years. We used to spend beautiful evenings together. In those days, Pankaj, me, and Talat Aziz were famous. We would work together.”
In yet another of his interactions with IANS, Anup Jalota shared that he never spoke to anybody about his best friend, Pankaj Udhas suffering from the cruel disease of cancer. Anup remarked that although he realised that the disease might take away his friends’ life, nevertheless, he couldn’t fathom it would happen all so soon. Remembering fond days with the ghazal maestro, Anup said:
“I never told anybody about his illness. I knew it would take him, but never imagined that it would be so soon. My trio with Pankaj and Talat was quite famous. We have done so many concerts together. He has had a major contribution in helping ghazals reach households.”

Taking to her IG handle on February 26, 2024, Pankaj Udhas’ daughter, Nayaab Udhas dropped the most heart-wrenching picture note, revealing the demise of her father at the age of 72. She remarked that her father passed away after suffering from a prolonged disease.
