Industry veteran, Annu Kapoor’s love for his country, India, knows no bounds. In a recent interview, the actor called himself a true ‘loyalist’ and got emotional while discussing ‘deshbhakti’ in a candid conversation. Annu’s loyalty to the nation takes on a whole different meaning when you find out that he never applied for US citizenship despite being married to a wife born in America.
Vicky Donor actor, Annu Kapoor sat down for a candid chat with ANI recently, and he couldn’t hold back from sharing his love for India. The actor, who got emotional as he discussed his patriotism, revealed that despite his wife, Anupama Patel, being born in America, he never applied for US citizenship. For the unversed, Annu and Anupama's paths crossed in America, too. That first meeting was enough to draw them to each other, and they started looking for more ways to continue their relationship, even though Annu was married to his second wife, Arunita Mukherjee, at that time.
Speaking about his family, Annu revealed that besides his wife, his three kids were also American. While the actor did not believe in imposing his patriotism on the rest of his family, he himself never felt the need to possess a green card. He strongly stated:
"I will die before taking another country's passport. This country can throw me in a well or can shoot me or doesn't give me anything but I am compelled. I am loyal to my country."
Annu Kapoor elaborated that understanding ‘India’s pulse’ didn’t need a deep dive into complex subjects, news channels, or trending topics. Instead, it came from going out and meeting its people. In fact, doing so could also broaden one’s knowledge of Indian politics and its democracy according to the actor.
Annu Kapoor then went on to give away his secret to understanding his motherland, which was to travel. The actor stated that such insight could only be gained from the ‘people, their mindset, and their daily struggles.’ Talking about how he achieved the same, Annu said:

“I've traveled across India, met its people, observed their language, psychology, and culture. Maine 56 ghaat ka paani piya hai.”
In the same interview with ANI, Annu Kapoor reflected further on what life had taught him. The actor emphasised that his identity wasn’t merely linked with fame. Instead, it was linked with the morals and values that had been passed down to him by his parents, such as love, respect, and resilience.
Likewise, Annu said that to him, success was more than the roles he had played. Rather, it was about the strong bonds and connections he formed along the way, be it with his loved ones or the people of India. He also made a sweet tribute to the city of Mumbai, saying:
“What I am today is because of my karmabhumi, Mumbai, where I've lived for 42 years.”
