The Social Network, directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, dramatised the founding of Facebook and the ensuing legal and personal conflicts among its co-founders. Based on Ben Mezrich’s book, The Accidental Billionaires, the film centres on young Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, and the betrayal, lawsuits, and ambition that followed. Now the film is all set for a part two but Andrew Garfield, who played 'Eduardo Saverin' is not returning and here's why.
Years later, talk of a sequel, at times dubbed as The Social Network Part II, has been circulating since as early as 2019. In June 2025, Sony and Sorkin officially announced that a follow-up movie is in development. The new film has been retitled, The Social Reckoning, and is slated for release on October 9, 2026.
While the original film looked at the birth and early drama of Facebook, the sequel promises to explore more recent controversies, particularly the internal documents and whistleblowing revealed in The Facebook Files. Yet amid all the anticipation, one question loomed, will the original cast return? And specifically, will Andrew Garfield reprise his role as 'Eduardo Saverin'? The answer unfortunately is a no.
In an interview at the New York Film Festival, Andrew Garfield was asked whether he’d reprise the role of 'Eduardo Saverin' in The Social Reckoning. His reply was simple, he said, no 'Eduardo' is in Singapore having a good time. He further affirmed that, while he will not appear in the film, he is looking forward to watching it when it’s released.
Although Garfield declines, some fans point out that he has surprised audiences before, for example, his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home was kept under wraps. He had repeatedly said he won't be in the film but at the end surprised the fans. That said, his current public statement makes it clear, he won't be returning as 'Eduardo Saverin' this time around.

With Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg who originally played 'Mark Zuckerberg' stepping away, The Social Reckoning is taking a different narrative tack. Jeremy Strong is set to portray 'Mark Zuckerberg' in the new film. Mikey Madison will play 'Frances Haugen', the Facebook engineer and whistleblower whose leaks sparked major investigations.
Jeremy Allen White will play 'Jeff Horowitz', the Wall Street Journal reporter who worked with 'Haugen', and Bill Burr is also among the cast in an undisclosed role. The film is being made not as a strict sequel but more of a 'companion piece' to the original film, The Social Reckoning aims to explore Facebook’s more recent controversies rather than revisit its origin story in full.
From a narrative standpoint, 'Eduardo Saverin’s' role in the early phase of Facebook is well documented in The Social Network. In subsequent years, his public presence is relatively muted; in real life, he moved to Singapore and stepped away from Facebook’s core operations. Garfield saying that 'Eduardo' is in Singapore' nods to that fact.
Nevertheless, because Garfield has surprised audiences before, there is always a faint possibility, perhaps a cameo or archival footage, that he could appear in The Social Reckoning. But for now, his public stance is firm, he will not be reprising 'Eduardo Saverin.' Fans are disappointed but are eagerly waiting how the story moves forward.
Andrew Garfield, born August 20, 1983, is a British-American actor. He gained early attention for his roles on stage and indie films, and his breakout moment came when he portrayed 'Eduardo Saverin' in The Social Network. Over the years, he has acted in a wide range of films, including Hacksaw Ridge, Silence, and Under the Silver Lake, as well as the Marvel universe’s 'Spider-Man' in The Amazing Spider-Man films.
Garfield has earned critical praise and award recognition, such as BAFTA nominations for his performance in The Social Network. As for his latest projects, he starred in After the Hunt, directed by Luca Guadagnino and co-starring, Julia Roberts and Ayo Edebiri.
