The countdown for Met Gala 2025 has started, and this year's prestigious gala night will be even more interesting as Shah Rukh Khan is going to make his debut. Not only him, Kiara Advani will also be flaunting her baby bump with her debut appearance. While we all eagerly awaiting their looks, there was a time when India was left shocked. In 2022, an American YouTuber's appearance at the Met Gala event raised eyebrows as she flaunted India's heritage jewellery, which once belonged to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
For the unversed, in 2022, American YouTuber Emma Chamberlain came dressed up in a pristine white skirt and styled it with a camel-hued ruffle detailing crop top featuring full sleeves. The Met Gala 2022's theme was America: An Anthology of Fashion. While Emma's outfit was simple and stunning, it was her diamond choker that left everyone's jaws dropped.
The then-20-year-old YouTuber, Emma wore an exquisite diamond choker, which was a part of the famous king, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh's famous Patiala necklace made by Cartier Paris. The choker was lent to Emma by French jewellery house Cartier. The necklace featured 2,930 diamonds and was commissioned in 1928. The centerpiece featured a rare De Beers yellow diamond. It was one of India's heritage, but it was disappeared under mysterious circumstance from India around 1948.
For the unversed, according to MAP Academy, the necklace disappeared around 1948 and it reappeared in parts in the public eye. The necklace is in its current form is Cartier's reconstruction over the original base as the missing elements have been substituted over the years. Talking about the necklace, MAP Academy said:
"Combining South Asian influences with European designs, the necklace comprised five platinum chains in addition to a choker or neck collar. These were entirely encrusted with small diamonds, with seven larger diamonds, each between 18 and 73 carats, as well as some emeralds and Burmese rubies, surrounding the central pendant, which held the De Beers diamond."
Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh was known for his larger than life living. From his Patiala peg served during one of his dinner gathering with the British royal to his Patiala necklace, it all has interesting stories attached to it. The Patiala necklace was designed for him as he thought of converting his De Beers diamond, into a heirloom piece. It is the seventh-largest diamond in the world.

The king has reached out to Cartier and gave them his precious gemstones and diamonds to encrust into a necklace. The necklace includes five rows of platinum chains which were embellished with 2,930 diamonds and some Burmese rubies. The necklace weighed over a thousand carats and on it's center is the 234.6-carat De Beer diamond, which is a size of a gold ball.
