America's favourite singing reality show, American Idol, is on its 24th season, and the excitement is high. The first live show of the competition aired on Monday, March 30, 2026 (ET), following weeks of pre-taped performances in Hawaii. With just 14 out of 20 idol hopefuls, the race to the Top 12 is officially underway. The live episode's theme was "Songs of Faith," and the contestants gave some of their best performances.
With the competition intensifying and major changes in audience voting rules, this season is turning out to be one of the most unpredictable ones in recent memory. Here's a recap of the night and who made it to the Top 12.
The episode kicked off with high emotions and one of the most unexpected shockers. The show's host, Ryan Seacrest, revealed that the voting from America's audiences had narrowed the Top 20 contestants down to 14. For the first time in the show's recent past, six singers were eliminated before the competition even began, even though they had already prepared for the night. The ones eliminated include Ruby Rae, Madison Moon, Makiyah, Abayomi, Kutter Bradley, and Genevieve Heyward.
With an understandably emotional beginning, the remaining contestants took on the "Songs of Faith" theme. Every contestant gave some of their best performances, and the whole episode was charged with spiritual energy. Keyla Richardson opened the night with a powerful performance of 'Jireh', one that judge Carrie Underwood said was the right "way to kick off the show."
Jesse Findling performed Rascal Flatts' Bless the Broken Road, followed by a moving rendition of Gratitude by Lucas Leon. MusicDaniel Stallworth, a music teacher by profession, absolutely ruled the stage with a powerful performance of Brighter Days, while Philmon Lee had his moment with Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man. Rae's rendition of Up to the Mountain was what judge Lionel Richie described as the "perfect performance", and Jake Thistle's Have a Little Faith in Me was a fiery moment that proved his mettle as a seasoned entertainer.

Next on the stage was Braden Rumfelt, one of the top competitors, whose rendition of Hard Fought Hallelujah once again left a mark, though he seemed a little overwhelmed and nervous as the song progressed. Julián’s performance of Coldplay's Fix You once again proved his star potential, while Kyndal Inskeep's rendition of Nothing But the Blood received immense appraisal. Jordan McCullough performed I Can Only Imagine, which was received with a huge round of applause.
Brooks made a bold impression with John Lennon's iconic piece, Imagine, and Hannah Harper continued her strong run with a deeply moving performance of At the Cross (Love Ran Red). For the final performance, Chris Tungseth's rendition of Cody Johnson’s By Your Grace was a mind-blowing way to end the spiritually charged night with his "special and unique" voice, as Underwood mentioned. Judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan praised all Top 14 contestants’ authenticity and growth.
Well, this time, the overwhelming number of votes flooding in from all corners of America has made it difficult to screen the participants. Just as the night seemed to be progressing toward the elimination that would confirm the Top 12, Ryan Seacrest mentioned that due to an overwhelming number of votes flooding in during the live broadcast, the results could not be processed in time. Yes! For the first time in the show's 24 seasons, no elimination was announced at the end of the episode.

The voting rules of the competition have now changed. Fans no longer need to install the American Idol mobile app, and they can directly submit their votes via AmericanIdol.com, on social media, and also through text messages. Seacrest mentioned that the show received 17 million votes over the past two weeks, and for now, the Top 14 contestants get another chance to save themselves from elimination.
New episodes of American Idol can be watched on ABC every Monday (also available on Disney+ and Hulu), with the finale scheduled for May 11, 2026. For Indian fans, the episodes will air every Tuesday on JioHotstar.
