Alka Yagnik is one of the most renowned names in the Bollywood playback industry. She started off her career in music at the age of 6, when she used to sing for Akashvani Radio in Calcutta. Thereafter, in 1980, she made her debut in playback singing for Hindi cinema with the movie, Payal Ki Jhankaar. However, it was her energetic performance in the 1988-film, Tezaab’s song, Ek Do Teen which gave her unparalleled recognition. For the unversed, this peppy dance number featured Madhuri Dixit in her iconic avatar and people still love the same.
In a recent interaction with Bollywood Bubble, Alka Yagnik walked down the memory lane and talked about the iconic song, Ek Do Teen featuring Madhuri Dixit, which was the first step towards her impeccably successful career. The artist revealed how initially, she was apprehensive about the actress being able to pull off such an energetic dance number, and if Madhuri would be able to do justice to it. Recalling her words, she said:
“Yeh ladki to bohot chup chap si lagti hai yeh kaise karegi? Energy hi nahi hai, energy kaha se layegi? My God, when I saw the song on screen, she was a dynamite. So the entire orchestration, the song, the picturisation, the way its presented, sab kuch bohot khubsurat tha. Lekin jab magic create hona hota hai na, toh har cheez apne jagah pe aa jaati hai.”

In the same conversation, Alka was asked to share her views on another of her popular song, Choli Ke Peeche, which she sung along with Ila Arun. Recently, the new film, Crew reused the original track and reprised it in a new version in the movie by adding certain elements of rap music. This song featured Kareena Kapoor Khan in a sizzling avatar. Sharing her views on such a recreation of her song, Alka remarked how she was perfectly fine with it, since the original voice remains the same. It is only a remixed version with additional parts of rapping. In her words:
“Kya comment karu uske upar? Aur woh gaana bohot popular hai. Pehle bhi bajta tha bohot, abhi bhi baj raha hai. Maine bola ki theek hai hamara gaana hai, hamare awaaz main hi hai remix, baj raha he bajne do achcha hi hai! It is a hit song… usme rap-wap daal kar ke… theek hai yaar. Ye zamaana hi he, ye chal hi raha aisa, ye daur hi he aisa.”
Speaking along the same lines, Alka Yagnik then shared her perspective on the new trend of rap music, that tends to base itself on erstwhile hit songs dating back to some golden ages of music. The artist mentioned how it is nothing uniquely created, since the composers only add a faster rhythm to the song. However, she added that things only take an ugly turn when these modified songs tend to destroy iconic songs which were sung by stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. She said;
“Naya kuch nahi kar rahe hai, bas rhythm pattern change kar rahe hain. Bich mein rap daal dete. bolte gaana hit he. Arre woh hit hi tha! Lekin Lata didi, Asha Didi ka gaana bhi utha rahe he? Those songs of that era… unko jab tehes nehes karte hei toh takleef hota he. Those are masterpieces, those should not be touched.”

Previously, Ila Arun, criticised music composers for remixing an iconic song like Choli Ke Peeche in the film, Crew. The singer, who sung the most important refrain of the track remarked how she was informed of such a major decision only a few minutes prior to the launch of the song. Moreover, she claimed to be dumbfounded after hearing the remixed version of the song, and claimed how it completely ruined the original one.
