The popular Japanese survival thriller show, Alice in Borderland is back on Netflix with the third season, which was released on September 25, 2025. The show is directed by Shinsuke Sato and stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya in lead. Amid the buzz around its release, the lead actors opened up about the challenges of stepping back into 'Borderland' and the toll of its dark and deadly narrative.
Recently, the lead actors of the popular show, Alice in Borderland sat down for a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, in which they opened up about the emotional toll of working on a narrative that explores themes like suicide, death, depression and more. Talking about the same, Kento mentioned that even though there were challenges, his motivation was to deliver his best work to the global audience. On the other hand, Tao shared the importance of a friendly environment while shooting such a show. She was quoted as saying:
"Those heavier themes, [well], when you put yourself in a very dark place for a long time, in a very Stoic way, it can affect your physical health as well. So what we actively did on set was to just laugh, there was a lot of laughter on set. I was just talking to Kento, to the crew, and I think that made the work itself not just something that was brutal but something that also makes you feel a sense of love."
In the same conversation, Tao and Kento were asked about the chances of returning with Season 4, to which Kento shared that he is a fan of the show and loves working with the entire team. He also said that if the show returns with another season, he would love to be a part of it. Then, Tao mentioned that in Season 3, ‘Usagi’ is pregnant, so the show can continue by showing the story of the child. In her words:
"Thinking ahead, obviously in this season, which you haven’t seen yet, [Usagi is] pregnant, so there’s going to be a child in the future, and she would love to see that child return [to the normal world], not just the two lead characters. The story is set to be familial, I think that could be really interesting."
The show, Alice in Borderland started on Netflix in December 2020, which follows 'Arisu' and his friends, who find themselves in a strange and empty world of Tokyo, where they have to play deadly games to survive. In Season 2, 'Arisu', 'Usagi' and their friends complete the challenges given by the face cards, Jack, Queen and King. The season ended with the suspense of the Joker card. Season 3, shows the abduction of 'Usagi', which forces 'Arisu' to enter the 'Borderland' again in order to save her.
