Known for her magnetic screen presence and memorable performances as ‘Dr. Elizabeth Corday’ in ER and ‘River Song’ in Doctor Who, Alex Kingston has long been celebrated for portraying women of intelligence, courage, and depth. But behind her successful acting career lies a personal life shaped by both immense love and struggle.
Now 62, her journey to this moment has been anything but smooth. From a public affair scandal involving her Hollywood ex-husband to enduring a hard fertility journey and failed adoption hopes, Alex has experienced nearly every shade of love and loss imaginable. Here’s a closer look inside the actress’s emotional, inspiring, and sometimes turbulent romantic history.
Before her fame in Hollywood, Alex Kingston met Ralph Fiennes, the acclaimed actor best known for playing ‘Lord Voldemort’ in Harry Potter, while studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in the 1980s. Their connection was instant, and the couple went on to date for nearly a decade before marrying in 1993. At the time, Kingston was a rising theatre star, while Fiennes’ career was skyrocketing in films. Speaking to The Telegraph in 2003, Alex said:
“When we were together, his star was so much brighter than mine. I was doing theatre; he was getting big parts in film. The stardom thing became a problem, but there was never any sense of competition.”
Despite the pressures of fame, Alex truly believed their marriage would last. When they married, she had thought it was forever. However, just four years later, their fairytale began to crumble. In 1995, Ralph Fiennes began an affair with his Hamlet co-star, Francesca Annis, who was 18 years older than him.
The scandal shook the British acting world, and for Alex, it was a devastating betrayal. The couple separated in 1996 and officially divorced in 1997. Fiennes went on to live with Francesca Annis until their split in 2006. Speaking to The Evening Standard in 2006, Alex opened up about how the heartbreak nearly destroyed her. The pain of their breakup forced her to flee London and start fresh in America. For years, she couldn’t even watch Fiennes’ films until, years later, she finally found peace. She could be quoted as saying:

“My marriage split left me feeling suicidal. You don’t know where life is going to take you. You think you know, and then suddenly it’s all completely wrong.”
After moving to the U.S., Alex met Florian Haertel, a German journalist, on a blind date in Los Angeles in 1997. The two instantly connected and married the following year in 1998. This time, she hoped for a more grounded love and perhaps the chance to start the family she had always dreamed of. But soon, another challenge arose. She had thought the chemistry between her and her first husband was wrong and when she met Florian, she assumed it would all be fine. However, despite their best efforts, the couple struggled to conceive. The doctors hadn’t found anything medically wrong.
Determined to become a mother, Alex began IVF treatment, balancing intense emotional stress with her demanding filming schedule on ER. Over the years, she endured 13 rounds of IVF before finally becoming pregnant with her daughter, Salome, born in 2001. In a 2014 interview with the Daily Mail, she described the journey as ‘tough’ and emotionally draining. Despite the toll it took on her body, Alex considered Salome her greatest blessing. It was worth everything she had said, as she reflected on the years of hope and heartbreak.
After Salome’s birth, Alex hoped to expand her family, but Florian wasn’t willing to continue IVF. In 2009, she revealed that two attempts to adopt a child had failed, an experience she found deeply painful. She said that people assume that celebrities can adopt babies as easily. Still, they don’t hear about the ones who aren’t successful because they don’t like talking about it and it’s too painful. Unfortunately, her marriage to Florian began to falter. After 11 years together, they separated in 2009, and their divorce was finalised in 2013.
In 2015, Alex found love once again, this time with Jonathan Stamp, a television producer. The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at All Saints Anglican Church in Rome. This new chapter marked a turning point for the actress. Having weathered years of emotional storms, Alex seemed finally at peace. After her daughter completed her education, she moved back to the UK in 2019, closing the long-distance chapter of her life.
Alex Kingston’s story is proof that love doesn’t always have to end in tragedy, it can evolves, transforms, and sometimes begins new.
