Alec Baldwin is a famous actor, producer, and comedian who carved a special place in the hearts of cinephiles over the years with his versatility across film, television and stage. Baldwin rose to fame in the late 1980s with his roles in Beetlejuice and Glengarry Glen Ross, among others. Apart from his acting career, Alec Baldwin has often grabbed attention with his outspoken personality and the controversies surrounding him. Recently, he met with an accident in the Hamptons, which brought him back to the headlines. Amid this, let's have a look at his infamous case on the set of his movie, Rust, wherein the cinematographer died, and the actor was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Back in October 2021, Alec Baldwin was shooting for the movie, Rust in New Mexico. The actor was holding a gun, with which he was supposed to film. However, unfortunately, the gun, which was not supposed to be filled with live ammo, accidentally fired. Alec was reportedly holding the gun to the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, while practising. When the gun fired, it ended up wounding Halyna Hutchins, the director, Joel Souza, and ultimately killing the cinematographer. Halyan was already famous by then for filming movies like Archenemy and Blindfire, and thus, her demise on the sets caused a clamour around. By the next day, it was confirmed that the gun Alec Baldwin was holding had a live round in it.
Following this, the script supervisor of the film, Rust filed a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin, claiming that the actor and other producers failed to keep the set safe. As per the lawsuit, before the fire took the life of the cinematographer, it misfired twice and was left unattended during the filming. The lawsuit also further stated that Alec and other producers skimmed the safety measures to cut costs.
Following this, Alec Baldwin sat for an interview with ABC, sharing his side of the story. He stated that someone was responsible for the fatal incident, but it was not him. Alec further shared that he had no idea about the gun being filled with live ammo, and he didn't have any idea about the cinematographer dying on the set until hours after the incident happened. He further revealed that he and Halyna discussed camera angles before the incident took place, and she instructed him to point the gun at her armpit. As per Alec, he was told that the gun was cold, and he didn't pull the trigger as well, but was only cocking the gun, as they were rehearsing only. Alec said:
"The trigger wasn't pulled. I didn't pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Even now, I find it hard to believe that. It doesn't seem real to me. I have no idea. Someone put a live bullet in a gun. A bullet that was not even supposed to be on the property."
Following this, a settlement was reached between Halyna Hutchins' husband and Alec Baldwin. Talking about the same, Baldwin, on an IG post, said it was a resolution of this tragic and painful situation, and throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for the late cinematographer's son. In October 2022, the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office submitted the findings to the prosecutors of the cinematographer's death. On the other hand, Alec, who was one of the producers of the film, sued the armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and other crew members for their negligence, claiming that he had no idea about the gun being filled with live rounds, and had no way to know these facts.

In January 2023, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and Alec Baldwin were charged with involuntary manslaughter, accusing them of violating the basic safety rules while using the gun. Later, Baldwin pleaded not guilty. A few months later, the case against Baldwin was temporarily closed for further investigation, while the case against the film's armourer continued.
Cut to October 2023, when new investigations pointed out that the gun couldn't be fired without the trigger being pulled, which led the prosecutors to charge Baldwin again in Early 2024. While Hannah Gutierrez-Reed pleaded guilty in March 2024, Baldwin's trial began in July of the same year. After a few months, the judge labelled the case with 'prejudice', meaning it could never be reopened. This decision came after discovering that the prosecutors had hidden the key evidence. In December 2024, the prosecutors officially dropped their appeal, thereby ending the long legal battle of the actor.
Talking about the movie, Rust, after the accident in 2021, the filming was temporarily paused. In 2023, the shooting was resumed, but it was being shot in Montana, not in New York. Alec Baldwin returned to his dual role as the actor and the producer of the film, but several new safety measures were put on the sets. While the entire crew was new, the place of the late cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, was taken by Bianca Cline. Halyna's husband was named as one of the executive producers of the film, which was a part of his settlement with the actor. Rust had limited screenings and festival showings in 2024, due to the controversy surrounding the movie and legal battles related to it. If the reports are to be believed, it didn't have a wide theatrical release as of 2025.
