Police arrived at the scene, but it was not immediately clear which of the actor siblings was driving or what caused the crash. The officers talked to the actors, and they were also seen making phone calls. According to Page Six, they appeared sombre while answering the police questions. Authorities helped Alec and Stephen shelter from the rain while they were being investigated.

A garbage truck was parked nearby, but the company that operates it shared that their driver was not at fault in the collision. Following the accident, Alec took to Instagram and said, 'I'm fine', and mentioned that the garbage truck, which was 'the size of a whale', cut him off while driving, and to avoid colliding with it, he hit a tree. His recent accident adds to a period of high media scrutiny for the actor, following the 2021 fatal shooting on the set of the film, Rust.

A source close to the actor told Page Six that he was in the area attending films and moderating panels throughout the week of the festival, which ran from October 5 to October 13. The source shared:

"He [Alec Baldwin] has been out there all week, he attended films and moderated panels."

On Saturday, October 11, Alec attended the Buffalo International Film Festival (BIFF) for the world premiere of the documentary, Baristas vs. Billionaires. He is a producer on the film, which features Starbucks baristas in Buffalo who led a national unionisation effort. Alec participated in a Q&A session with the audience after the premiere at the North Park Theatre. He confirmed his presence in New York on social media by posting a video of himself having dinner with acquaintances in a Buffalo restaurant on the same day.
