Akon and Tomeka Thiam have led a very private life and kept their marriage out of the public eye. However, their divorce proceedings have been quite publicised given the circumstances. Tomeka filed for divorce papers just three days before their 29th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2025. According to court documents accessed by Billboard, the reason cited for the separation is 'irreconcilable differences'. After keeping their private life under wraps, people are stunned and curious to know about what kind of differences Akon and Tomeka developed to seek a divorce after around three decades of marriage.

Whispers about their divorce proceedings also suggest that Tomeka has sought spousal support in the form of USD 108 million in the divorce settlement. Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Akon has registered almost all of his assets under his mother's name, so on paper, he isn't as affluent. However, no official source has confirmed these rumours or substantiated the alleged alimony numbers. The singer revealed in various interviews that polygamy was part of his culture, with his father having multiple wives and him growing up with around nineteen siblings and half-siblings. Once in an interview with VladTV, when Akon was asked about whether he has multiple wives, he answered it vaguely. The singer shared:

“I’mma let it stay a rumor. I like the fact that people are guessing now, I love it. I’m not confirming nor denying. You go online, you may see nine, you might see seven, you might see four. I love it, though.”

However, later the singer confirmed that he is a polygamist and is married to multiple women. In an interview with Drink Champs, Akon did not reveal how many wives he had but said he had more than one. When the host asked him if he had nine wives, the singer said that it was 'inflated'. Then, he was asked if he had to follow a specific religion to have multiple wives. Akon replied that he could follow any faith and be a polygamist. Many have speculated whether this led to the divorce between Akon and Tomeka. The singer's estranged wife has only once addressed his polygamous beliefs by stating, "He knows his way home". Talking about this lifestyle of his, Akon had once said:

"(Polygamy is) part of our culture… For me, it looks normal, because it's culture for us. We didn't go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is that they created all these rules without putting nature into account."

According to reports, Akon is also a father to nine children from various women. However, the singer revealed that he might not be physically close to his children, but he makes sure to 'be there' for them by providing for his kids financially. He also relied on FaceTime to communicate and connect with them. Akon shared:

"My job ain't to be doing all that extra stuff and these holidays and recitals. While I'm taking care of my responsibility to make sure the family has a roof over their head and food, if I have the time to do that and show love, yes, I will do that. Communication allows me to be there every day. That's what my FaceTime phone is for."
