Aishwarya Rai is one of the most gorgeous women in the world, and her Miss World win is proof of the same. However, she lost the Femina Miss India 1994 title to Sushmita Sen. It was certain to everyone that Aishwarya would win the Miss India pageant as she was a supermodel. However, it was Sushmita Sen who got the Miss India crown. But do you know a tragic incident on the stage led Aishwarya to lose the contest?
Despite charming the judges, Aishwarya Rai lost the Miss India title to Sushmita Sen, and ad guru, Prahlad Kakkar, reveals the reason behind it in a recent interview with ANI. Calling it a tough competition, he recalled:
“It was a tough competition. Both of them were stunning. But Aishwarya fell. Finally, there was a question-and-answer round, which was an extra round because they couldn't make up their minds. Sushmita's answer was far more confident and composed than Aishwarya's, and she won the last round. It was touch and go.”
In an interaction with Mashable India, Sushmita Sen reminisced about competing with Aishwarya Rai on the platform of the Miss World 1994 pageant. The diva heartily recalled fond anecdotes about her contender, Aishwarya Rai, and claimed that the latter’s beauty made it impossible for any other contestant to dream about winning the pageant, as she was the pin-up poster of beauty during that time.
Once in a throwback interview, Prahalad Kakkar revealed that the reason Sushmita won Miss India was because she was more polished and confident than Aishwarya. Prahlad also stated that due to her convent education, Sushmita performed better in the Question Answer round, while Aishwarya wasn't as fluent in her English-speaking skills.
Ever since the 1994 Miss India pageant made Sushmita Sen bag the crown over Aishwarya Rai, she has been continuously asked about whether, at any point, she felt competitive with Aishwarya. On the contrary, both divas have maintained a cordial relationship with one another, and neither of them has ever spoken anything against the other.

During her appearance on the celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan in 2005, Sushmita was once asked why she thought she deserved the Miss India title over Aishwarya Rai. In her response, she mentioned:
“I don't compare myself to Aishwarya's performance. I think she was fabulous on stage. I do believe in two things: One, that night, I was the best and that's why I deserved to win, not because I was better than someone else. It is only because I was at my best.”
