Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is happily married to the love of her life, Abhishek Bachchan. However, there was a time when she was in a relationship with Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan, and the duo would often paint the town red with their camaraderie. But after a few years of courtship, Aishwarya accused Salman of physical violence and parted ways with him on an ugly note. Since then, Bhaijaan dated many actresses, but didn't marry anyone.
In an old interview with Filmfare in March 2002, Aishwarya Rai was asked to reveal tidbits about the rumours of Salman Khan banging on her apartment door relentlessly and her not opening it. To this, the actress cleared the air and said that she was exhausted after coming from the shoot of Devdas and immediately fell asleep after reaching home. She had no idea that Salman was out there banging on her door as she was fast asleep. In her words:
"Oof, such heavy weather was made about it. Yeah, I'd been shooting through the night for Devdas, I was completely pooped when I reached home. He spoke to me and said that he was coming over. I had a cup of hot chocolate and, before I knew it, fell into a deep sleep. I didn't know when Salman arrived, I didn't hear the knocks on the door. Obviously, he was worried, since he had spoken to me only half an hour before that."

She also confirmed the fact that Salman banged the door so incessantly that even his knuckles were bleeding. However, the actress mentioned that the news headlines made the incident sound so dramatic and things were blown out of proportion. Aishwarya recalled that Salman had to call his house help for assistance, and the next day, reports were circulating that Aishwarya had locked Salman out of her house. She added:
"Yes, he banged the door incessantly, his knuckles were bleeding, but nothing as dramatic as what written in the papers. A couple of hours later, he summoned his staff for help, I woke up sheepishly. The next thing, I read in the papers is that I've locked him out of the house. And please, why would my poor father give any security guy instructions not to let Salman into the house? We don't belong to some militant household."
Further in the interview, Aishwarya was asked if the rumours about her being portrayed as a victim of abuse were true. The actress refuted such claims that she had an accident and fell off the stairs the previous year, but she was being asked the same question about physical abuse again and again. Denying all such speculations, Aishwarya said:
"That's the giddy limit. Do I look like a masochist or the sort who'd go through physical or verbal abuse? A year after my accident... when I fell off the stairs, I'm still being asked if I was physically abused. It saddens me that I'm being portrayed as this battered woman. How long to endure falsehoods being bandied about as the truth? A lie being constantly repeated gets validation. Who knows if 100 people tomorrow say that the sky is fuschia pink and theorise about it in the papers, someone's actually going to believe that the sky is pink."

In the same interview, Aishwarya Rai also reacted to Salman Khan's family receiving a lot of malice as their love story was transformed into a communal slant. Speaking about the same, the actress mentioned that they were living in scary times, and she even got a fan mail stating that they would fix Salman and his family. However, she added that Salman's family were extremely supportive of her and they would often check on her while she was on the sets. Aishwarya shared:
"That's really scary. We live in tough times... why fan the communal flames some more. I realised the disastrous repercussions when I got fan mail saying that they'd fix Salman and his family. That really upset me. But Salman's family has been extremely supportive. The news poured in when I was shooting for Devdas. They kept calling on me throughout the day to check if I was alright. Salman who's stayed away from the media for over 10 years wanted to talk first time. Why? Because my family was upset. I feel responsible somewhere because two innocent families have been dragged into all this muck."
When asked about Salman Khan's take on the whole matter, Aishwarya Rai revealed that the former asked her to relax. However, she also added that people should not torment and sadden her parents over her affair with Salman, as it was her personal matter. Aishwarya stated that Salman was one of the most vilified and misunderstood people, who never expressed his stance, but she could sense that he was also hurt. In her words:
"Relax! That's exactly what Salman tells me. But why sadden my parents, why torment them? What's the issue here? That two people are seeing each other? It's my personal opinion, but Salman's one of the most vilified and misunderstood people. He's never felt the need to explain his stance. But this time, I can see that there's a lot of hurt there. I didn't know that a man and woman seeing each other would ruffle so many feathers. An editor tried to humour me and said, 'Darling all No 1's go through this. That's the price of success'."
For the unversed, Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan's love blossomed on the sets of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
