Famous fashion designer, Neeta Lulla started her fashion designing journey in her twenties. She took up the tailoring course after her disinterest in studies. However, she never knew that her one decision would make her India's most celebrated fashion designer. She made headlines with her costumes in famous films in the '90s. But a huge credit to her career goes to her in-laws, who wanted her to do something in life as they all were highly educated.
In an interview with Hauterrfly, Neeta Lulla revealed that she had no interest in studies, and to escape it, she got married. However, her husband and her father-in-law were accomplished doctors, and everyone in their family was well-educated. She stated that she didn't want to study, but they told her to take any additional course after, so that's how she ended up picking tailoring and it changed her life. Talking about the same, Neeta said:
"I thought I'll get married, kyunki parents bol rahe the padhai karo, aur mujhe padhai karni nahi thi. Toh I said, 'Chalo shaadi karlo'. Jab meri shaadi hui toh my husband was a doctor my in-laws were well-educated. Mera father-in-law was a doctor gold medalist, psychiatrist, my husband was also a doctor."

Neeta added but she was the only one, who was tenth pass with 45-40 percent. They forced her to study, to which, she said she would pack her bag and leave. However, they forced her to complete the 12th class and pick a hobby later. She agreed and thought of doing tailoring, thinking that she would get to create and wear new clothes. Describing the incident, Neeta recalled:
"Family mein sab log padhe likhe the except for me tenth standard mein dhakka maar 45 percent toh unhone kaha tumko toh kuch karna padega. Mai ne kaha mai bag pack karke wapas jaa rahi hoon kyunki mai ne toh shaadi ki I don't want to study, and you are making me study. And they said, 'Theek hai tumko padhai nahi karni toh 12th standard toh complete karo, aur uske baad mein koi ek hobby lelena.' Toh mai ne kaha theek hai tailoring kar lete hai kyunki usme fir naye kapde banane ko milege aur pehne ko milege. So that's how I took up tailoring thinking it was a hobby, but it was a full-fledged fashion education."
In an interview with the YouTube channel, Wiping Out The Norm, Neeta Lulla recalled that Sridevi wanted her to design costumes for her film, Chandni. So, she arranged a meeting with Yash Chopra. However, the ace director looked unhappy seeing her and called Sridevi as he thought that she couldn't design Indian clothes. Recalling the moment, Neeta shared:
"He called her in front of me. I was in my regular work clothes which was a suit. He looked at me and said, 'Tumko desi kapde banane aate hai.' I looked at him, first toh I was dumbstruck I did not know what to say I kept quiet, then he called Sridevi, and said, 'Tumne is ladki ko bhej diya, yeh kya kapde banayegi. Yeh toh suit mein aayi hai. Isko pata bhi hoga ki kapde kaise banege.' So I don't know what the conversation was."
The ace fashion designer recalled how Yash Chopra was happy after seeing her work in the film Chandini. Later, they collaborated on films like Lamhe and Darr. She recalled another anecdote, wherein Yash Chopra told her to design an outfit at the last minute for a song. She received the call for the same at 12 in the afternoon and asked her to make a dress, and by 2:30, the outfit was completed.
