Adam Sandler is back as 'Happy Gilmore' to once again swing his clubs, and fans could not have been more excited to see him reprise his iconic role from 1996. Coming back after a gap of nearly three decades from the original film's release, the much-awaited sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, finally dropped on Netflix last week. However, this time the film was more than a sports comedy with a focus on family moments, heartfelt tributes to the deceased actors of the original film and major story changes. With so many conversations around the film, everyone wanted to know if it translated into viewership, and here's the result.
Unlike Happy Gilmore, which was released in the big screens, Happy Gilmore 2 chose the OTT way and was released on the streaming giant, Netflix. According to the platform, the newly released sequel got a massive 91.9 million minutes watched in its opening weekend. In terms of views, the sequel got 46.7 million views between the weekend of July 25 and 27, 2025.
The impressive viewership for Happy Gilmore 2 has made it the biggest US opening weekend for a Netflix film, according to USA Today. Adam Sandler's popular sequel is presently at the top spot around the world for movies streamed on Netflix. This feat is more special because IMDb reported that Happy Gilmore 2 was made on a modest budget of USD 30 million, and it has already brought a huge return on the investment. For those unaware, Showbiz Galore earlier reported that Adam Sandler received the biggest paycheck of USD 20 million, which is 10x more than his original USD 2 million fees back in 1996.
Fans had to wait for nearly 30 years to see Adam Sandler back in the role of 'Happy Gilmore'. But little do fans know that the makers were planning a sequel for some time, but things didn't go entirely as planned. Carl Weathers was going to reprise his vital role as 'Chubbs' in Happy Gilmore 2 where his son was going to take revenge on 'Happy' but sadly passed away in 2024. As a result, they had to rework the storyline. Sharing the situation, Adam Sandler said to Collider:
"We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, including what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change."
Happy Gilmore 2 follows the story of 'Happy' years later, when he has left golf after a major accident after his wife's death. Now, he has to get USD 300,000 to help his daughter fulfill her dream of becoming a ballet dancer, and golf is his only hope. During his new journey, he reunites with his old frenemy, Shooter McGavin and enters a clash to save Golf from a new energy drink owner played by Benny Safdie. Apart from the original cast reprising their role, the film features several cameos from Bad Bunny, Eminem, Kid Cudi, and Travis Kelce, and more.
