Ace Frehley's Addiction Made Him Leave KISS, Daughter, Monique Was His Motivation Behind Sobriety

Paul Daniel Frehley, popularly known as Ace Frehley, the founding guitarist of the rock band KISS, has died at the age of 74. Ace Frehley, who was known by his stage persona The Spaceman, passed away on October 16, 2025, in Morristown, New Jersey. A representative of Ace had previously confirmed that he was alive and battling a brain bleed after some early reports of his death were circulated. But then, his family confirmed his passing, sharing that they were 'completely devastated and heartbroken' by his death. As the talented musician leaves us, here's a look at his dark side, marked by addiction, and his daughter being his only reason for sobriety.

Ace Frehley was addicted to illegal substances and persuaded one of his girlfriends to indulge in it

Ace Frehley had a long history of substance and alcohol ab*se, which he has spoken about publicly. His addiction issues were a significant factor in his initial departure from KISS in 1982. In his memoir, he admitted that "alcohol and drugs were my constant companion, my best friend — and worst enemy". He noted that he was loaded on c*caine and booze while filming the 1978 movie, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Wendy Khadijah Moore, one of Ace Frehley's girlfriends, accounted his c*caine addiction in her book, Into the Void... with Ace.

She met him after his split with his ex-wife, Italian-American actress, Jeanette Trerotola. According to it, Wendy got entangled with Ace when he was heavily into drug addiction and even persuaded her to indulge in it. As per her book, she never had any addiction before, nor did she drink alcohol often, but her love for Ace led her to be easily persuaded to indulge in substance ab*se by him.

Ace Frehley's journey to sobriety

Ace Frehley entered sobriety in 2006, attributing his recovery to attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and a phone call with his daughter, Monique Frehley. He shared a special bond with her and would never want to let her see the dark side of him, which was marked by addiction. Ace's girlfriend, Wendy Khadijah Moore, mentioned his daughter in her book, Into the Void... with Ace, and wrote about her role in her father's sobriety. According to the text, the only time Ace would try to clean up his act was when Monique visited him.

Monique was aware of it and thus came to visit her dad, Ace Frehley, every few days. She lived with her mom but stayed in close contact with her dad. When she was not around, Ace used to lie on his bed and indulge in alcohol and substance abuse, according to Wendy's account. However, once Ace was in steady sobriety since 2006, he never looked back. It was all thanks to his determination to be a better man and lead a better life for himself and his daughter, Monique.
