This year's MET Gala is themed as Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. The event will explore the importance of style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, particularly in the United States and Europe. As informed by the MET Museum, Black dandyism refers to the tradition of Black men and simultaneously people of all genders through fashion, especially the ways of refined tailoring. The theme is supposed to be taken as a powerful form of self-expression and resistance. 

The Black Dandy is not simply equivalent to 'well-dressed' but to take classic European menswear and make it your own. One can expect the blend of sharp tailoring with vibrant colours, bold patterns and cultural significance at this year's MET as the designers bring their intentional, creative, and often subversive use of clothing to challenge stereotypes, assert humanity, and claim space in societies that have marginalized and erased Black identity. Seems interesting right? How much does it cost to attend the MET Gala?

The MET Gala is an elite-invite-only fashion event. However, there is a price to pay if you want to attend the prestigious event. An individual ticket to the MET starts at 75,000 US Dollars, which is approximately rounded to Rs. 63 lakhs. And if the attendees wish to get a table of 10 at the fashion event, they will have to pay a grand total of 350,000 US dollars with rounds to approx Rs. 3 crore for a night. All the earnings go directly to the Costume Institute's yearly budget, and this year, the MET has some special sponsors, including Louis Vuitton (Mr. Williams is Vuitton's menswear designer), Instagram, Africa Fashion International, Tyler Perry and Conde Nast.

How to get an invite to the MET Gala

As we all know by now, the MET Gala is an invite-only event with a highly selective guest list. The list is largely dependent on the approval of the editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour. However, it is not an easy task to get an invitation. To even get in the scope of Anna's consideration, one needs to be an 'IT' celebrity, a rising star. Should have a major association with major fashion houses and a strong public image, or be an extremely high-profile figure. Don't have the big links? No worries. There is another way to be eligible for the invite. You can be one of the mega-donors at the MET museum, which definitely gets you considered. However, that does not guarantee an invitation. 

Rules to attend the prestigious MET Gala

Attending the MET Gala is a massive opportunity. However, there are many rules applicable to attending the fashion event. The first rule is 'NO PHONES'. Yes! Anna Wintour has a strict no phone or selfie rule inside the exhibition. This is to ensure a fully present experience while attending the event without any distractions. Another rule set by the editor-in-chief is no parsley, onion or garlic. According to The New York Post, certain foods are banned from the event to prevent bad breath or from the herbs being caught in the attendees' teeth. Similarly, bruschetta isn't offered to the guests to eliminate any spillage risks on the extravagant outfits.

The no-wine rule was placed in 2016; model Karlie Kloss famously had to alter the length of her Met Gala gown following a red wine spill on the white fabric. MET is a no-smoking zone, no matter what your stature is, the celebrities are not allowed to smoke in the premises of the MET. Another rule by Anna Wintour is that she needs to pre-approve each and every outfit. When you pay the big bucks one would expect the right to choose, well, MET committe will decide a seat for you.

What will the MET Gala exhibition 2025 showcase?

The event will showcase a wide range of items, from garments to paintings, photographs, accessories, texts, and even films. The collection will span from the 18th century to the present day and is organized into 12 sections, each examining a different aspect of Black dandyism. The theme will include classifications of: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. The show will also feature pieces worn by enslaved people during the 19th century and contemporary designs by Virgil Abloh, Pharrell Williams, Grace Wales Bonner, and more.
