Sushant Singh Rajput was one of the most loved actors in Bollywood. His tragic death in 2020 came as a shocker to the entire nation. Recently, filmmaker, Abhishek Chaubey recalled memories with the late actor and shared why he was the perfect fit for the 2019 film, Sonchiriya. For the unversed, when the film was released, it didn't manage to impress the audience. However, after Sushant's death, audiences re-watched the film and it is now one of his best films.
Recently, filmmaker, Abhishek Chaubey sat down for a candid conversation with SCREEN and revealed the reason behind casting the Dil Bechara actor, Sushant Singh Rajput. The filmmaker shared that he and his team had multiple options for the film, including some ‘Bandra boys’; however Sushant had something desi about him, which convinced the makers of the film. Abhishek Chaubey was quoted as saying:
"The reason was very simple. We discussed his name among us and came to an agreement that there was something desi about Sushant. You know, with the other stars, these Bandra boys, I mean, not that they can’t do it, but it’s a longer journey to get from who they are to that world. For Sushant, it would be easier. He comes from a small town and has some idea of the kind of world we’re talking about."

Abhishek Chaubey further recalled the moment when Sushant Singh Rajput said ‘yes’ to the film. He explained that he met the Kaipoche actor one day in the evening and the very next day Sushant was in Abhishek’s office and agreed to the film. It is worth mentioning that viewers today believe that Sonchiriya was way ahead of its time. Abhishek Chaubey shared:
"Luckily for us, he said yes instantaneously. I went to meet him at four o’clock one evening while he was shooting, and the very next day, at four o’clock, he was sitting in our office and said yes to the film."

During the same interview with SCREEN, filmmaker, Abhishek Chaubey also recalled some good memories with the late actor. Abhishek mentioned that while they were shooting the film, they experienced some celestial events and for the same, Sushant always had a telescope. He further stated that after the pack up, Sushant used to lie down and watch the planets. During the candid chat, Abhishek shared that he once experienced the moment with him. In his words:
"There was some celestial event while we were shooting. And this guy, Sushant, had this huge telescope. Not the kind you keep at home as a hobby because it looks good. This was a proper, professional telescope. It had to be dismantled and brought on a truck from Bombay. A couple of young scientists came to the set to install it, in the camp, on the lawn outside where we were staying. And that’s what he would do. After the shoot packed up, you’d see him lying on the lawn, eyes glued, looking at planets. One day, everybody went and did that with him."
