The filmmaker, whose first film as a director was Dabangg, which reignited Salman's career, is still regarded as one of the best films of recent times. Despite such a gigantic success, Abhinav Kashyap is barely seen in the industry. After Dabangg, he had worked with Ranbir Kapoor in his second directorial. The audience's favourite, Sushant Singh Rajput's untimely demise, had sparked a major debate in Bollywood about the existence of nepotism inside the film industry. The controversial debate over nepotism had divided the industry into two parts, while the audience was mostly in support of the movement to end nepotism in B-town. The director had stated that because of nepotism and favouritism in the film industry, he was not given the opportunity to direct Dabangg 2. Reflecting on how Arbaaz and Sohail had allegedly warned people of not working with him, Abhinav had penned a long note on Facebook in which he had recalled the same, and it could be read as:
"My experience is no different. I have experienced exploitation and bullying first hand. Arbaaz Khan on Dabangg and ever since. So here is my story 10 years after Dabangg. The reason I moved out of making Dabangg 2 ten years ago is because Arbaaz Khan in collusion with Sohail Khan and family was trying to take control of my career by bullying me. Arbaaz Khan sabotaged my second project with Shree Ashtavinayak Films that I was signed up with by personally calling their head Mr. Raj Mehta and threatening him with dire consequences if they made a film with me."

When Abhinav Kashyap was working on his film, Besharam, and had finalised Ranbir Kapoor's name as the film's lead, the director was told by the producers to cast Katrina Kaif as the lead actress. However, the filmmaker had rejected this idea and gave a chance to his daughter's friend and actress, Pallavi Sharda. During the shooting of the film, reports were rife that Pallavi and Abhinav were spending more time with each other and had also developed a bond with one another.
The speculation about their relationship was all over the place, and it had started affecting his marriage with Chatura Rao. Although he and Pallavi had always denied their dating reports, but the controversy around their bond had already taken a toll on the filmmaker's marriage.
Abhinav Kashyap had tied the knot with ex-wife, Chatura Rao back in 1997, and they were blessed with two daughters. However, the filmmaker's alleged relationship with Pallavi Sharda had reportedly disrupted his marriage, and in 2017, they got divorced. However, when Abhinav was asked about the reason behind his divorce from Chatura, he had blamed Salman Khan and his family for mentally torturing him and controlling his career. Not only this, he had reportedly stated that people have stopped working with him because of Salman and his family.
