Aarya Babbar On Dad, Raj Babbar And Smita Patil's Relationship, 'That Was Genuine, Pure Love...'

Raj Babbar began his acting journey in theatre and soon ventured into Hindi and Punjabi films, which brought him under the spotlight. However, the focus shifted on his peronal life when his relationship with actress Smita Patil, despite being a married mam, made headlines. Everyone was curious to know what happened behind the scenes that affected everyone, including his two kids and later his son, Prateik, with the actress. The family hasn't talked much about it in years. But, Raj Babbar's son, Aarya Babbar, with his first wife, Nadira, recently opened up about his father's relationship with the late actress, Smita Patil. 

Aarya Babbar reveals he had a 'strained' bond with his father, Raj Babbar, due to his affair 

Aarya Babbar has started his journey in stand-up comedy and recently gave a performance where he spoke about his family's complex lives. In a video, he recalled that as a kid, he was often bothered by the media who wanted him to say something about his father's affair with Smita Patil. Consequently, it affected the bond between Aarya and his father. In his words:

"When I was 6-7 years old, I used to enjoy playing hide and seek, but I wasn't playing hide and seek with my friends. I was playing it with the media. They would pop out of nowhere, throw a microphone in my face and ask me, 'Your father is having an affair. How do you feel?'"

Aarya added that it was not a mere affair despite every chatter around his father's bond with Smita Patil. Rather, it was a pure love between them that he couldn't understand as a kid. However, as Aarya grew up, he began to understand love, which improved his bond with his father. Sharing his opinion, Aarya said: 

"But honestly, that wasn't an affair. That was genuine, pure love that Papa and Smita Ma felt for each other. As a family, we understood and respected that relationship and accepted it. But when you are 6-7 years old, you don't understand all of this. And it was because of this that my relationship with my father was strained."

Aarya Babbar admits his father, Raj Babbar, wasn't wrong 

When Aarya Babbar grew up and married, he understood his father's bond with Smita Patil. He also realised that Raj Babbar was not as wrong as he used to think. At the same time, their bond gave him a precious gift in the form of his younger brother, Prateik. Aarya stated: 

"Now that I am 43 and I have been married for 8-9 years, I understand, 'Baap itna bhi galat nahi tha. The silver lining of that relationship was that I got my little brother because of that. If there is anyone in my house that I love the most, it is my little brother."

Raj Babbar married Nadira Babbar in 1975, and the couple soon welcomed two kids. But, he met Smita Patil on their 1982 film, Bheegi Palkein set and fell in love with her. Consequently, he left his wife and married the actress. Soon, their son Prateik was born in 1986, but Smita died due to childbirth complications. Consequently, Raj and Nadira reconciled. Also, Prateik developed a good bond with everyone.

Prateik Babbar recently tied the knot with actress, Priya Banerjee on February 14, 2025. However, he didn't invite his father and half-siblings. Aarya and Juhi revealed that Prateik had stopped calling them months ago and alleged that someone might have influenced his thoughts. However, Priya mentioned that everyone they considered family was present on their big day.
