A 20-Year-Old Nepali Student Found Dead In KIIT, Viral Audio Tapes Hint At Verbal Abuse

Some educational institutes have recently become a boiling point of tension in the country. In a recent case, a tragic incident unfolded in Odisha's, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology when a Nepali student was found dead. The situation later escalated when other Nepali students joined to protest against the incident, and they were asked to leave. All this has eventually led to diplomatic tension between India and Nepal. Here's everything you must know about the incident. 

What caused the death of a 20-year-old girl's death in KIIT?

On February 16, 2025, Odisha's KIIT was celebrating a three-day fest when 20-year-old, Prakriti Lamsal's dead body was found in her hostel room. She was a third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student who died by suicide. The investigation is underway, but an audio clip went viral where a man was heard verbally abusing a woman who was heard sobbing. He called her a wh*r*" and even manipulated her to give an apology. Although the viral clip's authenticity isn't provided, the man and woman in the clip called each other Advik and Prakriti.

At the same time, some other Nepali students claimed a 21-year-old, BTech (Mechanical) student, Advik Shrivastava, was physically and verbally abusing her. They highlighted that the authorities didn't take notice of the issue and ignored her complaints. Advik was arrested the next day from the airport and charged with abetment of suicide. At the same time, Prakriti's body was sent for post-mortem and will be flown to Nepal. Her father, Sunil Lamsal, said: 

"I had sent my daughter for higher studies, trusting that she would be safe. What happened here is unacceptable."

Prakriti Lamsal's death led to major protests, forcing the government to step in

When the news about the incident spread, Nepali students protested in the university, and the KIIT university responded with violence. Students alleged security personnel and senior authorities verbally abused and manhandled protesting students. The incident videos went viral, where some officials made fun of Nepal's low GDP, and later, Nepali students were asked to leave the university. They were immediately boarded students on in buses and sent to Cuttack railway station. A student from Nepal said: 

"They (KIIT) didn't say anything, and they just asked us to leave."

On February 18, 2024, a three-member fact-finding committee was made by the state government to look into the matter, and State Higher Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj claimed that KIIT officials didn't inform the government about the incident and decision to remove nearly 800 foreign students. Consequently, six more people, including three senior university officials, the director of hostels, and two security guards, have been taken into custody. At the same time, Two cases, one on suicide and the other by police on the viral videos, have been filed.

KIIT faculty members issued apologies, but Nepal's PM expressed concern 

Soon after the action, some faculty members like Manjusha Pandey and Jayanti Nath, who made fun of Nepal's budget, apologised. KIIT also issued an apology and removed some officials without naming them. However, Nepal's government is miffed by the incident, and it may cancel issuing NOCs for students seeking admission in Odisha.

At the same time, their PM, KP Sharma Oli, has dispatched officials from New Delhi to meet students. Both the country's governments are in contact over the issue. Moreover, the KIIT fiasco has led to allegations and cross-allegations among political parties, hinting that the issue is far from over.
