Hollywood has been left shaken by the high-profile and brutal murder case of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer. Things took an even darker turn when their son, Nicholas Reiner, was accused of the same. Amid the court hearings for the high-profile case, another twist has changed things after Nick's attorney, Alan Jackson, abruptly stepped down from representing him. His sudden resignation, just a few days after Nick's scheduled arraignment, has raised fresh questions as new facts continue to unfold about the case.
Alan Jackson spoke to the media persons standing outside the courthouse on January 7, 2026 and confirmed that he was withdrawing from representing the case. But he declined to offer specific details. He mentioned that he was resigning due to some legal and ethical restrictions that prevented him from elaborating on the circumstances around his sudden exit. In his words:
"Circumstances beyond our control and, more importantly, beyond Nick's control have dictated that it's made it impossible to continue our representation."

Further, during a brief press conference, Alan emphasised that his decision was not based on a lack of confidence in the defence. Instead, his team's investigation had earlier led them to believe that Nick Reiner was "not guilty of murder" under California law. But despite his strong statement, Alan did not clarify the legal issues behind his exit.

After Alan Jackson's resignation, the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office will have to step in. Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greener will now represent Nick Reiner in the case. According to court records, Nick Reiner appeared briefly behind glass in the courtroom wearing jail attire, but his arraignment was postponed. Nick is now expected to formally enter a plea on February 23, 2026.

Later, in a public statement after the hearing, Deputy Public Defender, Ricardo Garcia acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and called it "an unimaginable tragedy" for the Reiner family and the wider Los Angeles community. He urged patience and compassion as the legal process moved forward. Meanwhile, Nick will remain in custody without bail and faces two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances that might expose him to life imprisonment without parole if convicted.

Legal prosecutors have alleged that Nick Reiner had killed his parents after the increasing personal and mental health struggles. Investigators have reportedly relied on cellphone tracking data to find his location and arrest him, hours after his parents' dead bodies were found. Simultaneously, witnesses have also described that there was a heated exchange between Nick and his father at a holiday gathering the night before the murder. However, there is no confirmation about it.

Alan Jackson is one of the most recognisable criminal defence attorneys in the U.S, known for managing complex and high-profile cases. He was a former senior prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, who later transitioned to private practice. During his private practice, he represented high-profile clients, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and Karen Read. Ironically, Alan has previously revealed that Rob Reiner's film, A Few Good Men, was the inspiration behind his decision to pursue a legal career.
