Who Is Victoria Canal? Born With Amniotic Band Syndrome, Accused A 'Powerful' Man Of Sexual Abuse

Victoria Canal, born Victoria Canal Tinius, is a Spanish-American singer and songwriter. She was born in Munich, Germany, and has been making a name for herself in the entertainment industry. At the young age of 27, the singer has built a strong community of fans for herself who love her unique voice and have been with her through the very beginning of her journey. Known for her songs such as Drama, Own Me, Ebony, Second, and Favour, the singer has produced some extremely popular tracks since her debut with Unclear in 2015.

Victoria Canal released her first EP (Extended Play), Victoria, in 2020, which was followed by another EP, Victoria (Without the Drama), in 2021, an EP, Elegy, in 2022, and a LP (Long Play), Slowly, It Dawns, in 2025. While most of her work was self-released, Victoria has now started releasing her music under the label, Parlophone. While her music has often made her the talk of the town, it was her recent revelation about experiencing sexual abuse and grooming as a young child that left her fans shocked. So, without much ado, let us take a look at everything there is to know about Victoria Canal.

Victoria Canal's early life and the amniotic band syndrome

Victoria Canal was born in Munich, Germany, on August 11, 1998. The singer is the daughter of architect and artist, Gwen Tinius and businessman, Francisco Canal. Due to her parents' nature of work, she spent a lot of time in different parts of the world, including Shanghai, Tokyo, Barcelona, Madrid, Dubai and Amsterdam. Cuban-American by birth, Victoria often refers to herself as Spanish-American because she was raised in Spain for most of her life.

Victoria Canal was born without her right forearm due to amniotic band syndrome. For the unversed, amniotic band syndrome or constriction ring syndrome (CRS) is a congenital disorder. There are no known causes for the deformity. In an interview with Prime Time report, Victoria compared her missing arm to something as ordinary as having 'an unlucky shaped nose'. She has insisted that she does not want to be boxed as 'the one-armed singer' like Stevie Wonder, who is not solely defined by blindness.

However, the singer has never allowed her disability to get in the way of her life. She shared that she would rather be known by her music than a disability, and has always kept her focus on the same. Her passion for the arts is truly visible in her creation, never giving anyone a chance to see her as anything but a superstar.

Victoria Canal's grandmother introduced her to music

Victoria is extremely passionate about her art and creative skills. While there is no denying that she is truly gifted, it didn't come without years of practice, discipline and determination. She once revealed that it was her grandmother who introduced her to music at an early age. By the age of six, she was already taking classical lessons, learning to play the piano and sing. Despite her disability, Victoria Canal soon started playing piano at a high level, proving yet again that where there's a will, there's a way

Victoria Canal's disability never stopped her from pursuing her goals. She learned to play the piano without an arm and developed a unique chord voicing and creative techniques that later became a significant part of her artistic identity. Victoria discovered songwriting at the age of 11 and started writing her own pieces with inspirations from musical legends such as John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw. Over the years, she participated in several competitions, and while her home kept shifting, her music became home for her soul.

Victoria Canal's experience with sexual abuse and grooming

Victoria Canal

In early August 2025, Victoria Canal took to her Instagram handle and shared a long post about an incident that happened early in her career. The singer revealed that she was groomed and sexually abused by an extremely 'powerful, decades-older man' when she was a teenager. Victoria shared a post on her social media, which elaborated on how the man first offered her a professional break but manipulated her into silence by making her believe that no one else wanted her. She added that her abuser told her that if she told anyone what was happening, it would end her career before it even began.

Victoria said the experience, which lasted a little over a year, had a lasting effect on her intimate life and that sharing her truth was part of her healing journey. While she didn't name her alleged abuser, the internet is speculating that she was talking about musician Michael Franti. However, there are no confirmations of the same. Victoria has been extremely open about the abuse, and her previous disclosures about body image and mental health are part of reclaiming her power. A part of her post read:

"I feel this sense of awe with all women, because truly, every woman I've spoken to has experienced some degree of violence. And as I type this now, I feel so strong in my body, so happy with who I've turned out to be, despite, and informed by, it all. Body Behave will be the first song that speaks to this experience, in a way that feels so hopeful and liberating. Alright. I've said it now. Peace runs through my body. Finally. Thank you for listening."
