His musical accolades include seven Grammys, eleven ACM awards, eight Dove Awards and many other recognitions. His high baritone has often captivated the hearts of millions.

It was his fatal stroke in 2013 which limited his singing as well as speaking ability. After his stroke, Randy made very limited appearances. However, it was his wife, Mary Davis, who stepped on his behalf. She not just nursed him out of the tragic stroke, but also made sure that her husband stayed relevant in the industry.

Mary grew up in Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas and reportedly studied Business Marketing at Baylor University. Before meeting Randy, Mary was married to Dr. Ritchie Beougher, a cosmetic dentist at Willow Bend Dental Office. The couple had two children together, a daughter named Cavanaugh and a son named Raleigh.

Randy Travis married Mary Davis in 2015; however, the couple had been engaged since 2013. And a couple of months after their engagement, Randy suffered a massive stroke. There was only 1 percent chance of his survival, but Mary stood by him like his shadow. He underwent brain surgery and went into a coma for six months. But all this while, the one person who was by his side was Mary.

Randy Travis' health took a toll in 2013 when he experienced difficulty breathing while working in his gym. While getting treated for the same, the singer suffered congestive heart failure and a stroke, which hampered his brain function. The infection also caused his lungs to collapse. One after the other, Travis went through a bout of illness.

There came a time when doctors told Mary about Travis’s condition and even asked her to say her final goodbye to him. During an interview with Fox News Digital, Mary recalled the crucial moment when doctors asked her to pull the plug. Speaking about the same, she said:

“It was that magical moment that I went to his bedside when they said, 'We need to pull the plug. He's got too many things going against him at that point.' He had gotten a staph infection and three other hospital-born bacterial viruses like Serratia, Pseudomonas, one thing after another, and the doctors were just saying, 'He just doesn't have the strength to get through this.”

However, Mary always believed that Travis was a fighter and that they were meant to be together. When she went to meet Travis, she got her sign and told the doctors that they would be fighting this. In her words:

“That's when I went to him. That was the moment that I knew that Randy Travis was gonna make it because he squeezed my hand and a tear went down his face. And I said, 'He's still fighting.”

After the stroke and multiple infections, Randy lost the ability to speak and sing. He could hardly walk and also had vision-related issues. While leaving the hospital, doctors told Mary that Travis would be bedridden and she would have to be in and out of hospitals. They also told her that she was taking a huge responsibility, as he would never recover. However, Mary hardly cared for their comments and treated him like a child.

Within a year, Randy began showing signs of improvement and started walking short distances. Meanwhile, Mary Travis began making public appearances on his behalf. Two years after the stroke, Randy and Mary married on March 21, 2015. During their emotional wedding ceremony, Travis sang his song, "Are We In Trouble Now," to his lady love.

When Randy Travis was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, he could barely speak, and it was Mary who stepped in and became his voice. Joining him on stage, Mary said:

“It is a daunting task of being the voice of this man who so eloquently put words to melody to make beautiful music. I don’t think he understands how important he has been to country music. It’s that humility that’s in Randy that doesn’t allow him to think he made that big of a difference. Maybe now that he’s in the Hall of Fame, he’ll get it.”
