Spotify has announced a brand new feature for its users, which has taken the internet by storm. Well, it is called ‘lossless audio’ and music lovers around the world can’t stop talking about it.
Since the announcement, netizens are excited for this highly-awaited upgrade. However, if you are a casual music listener, you might be curious why audiophiles (i.e, people who are particular about sound quality) are celebrating this new feature. Well, here's everything you must know about ‘lossless audio’ on Spotify and how to enable it.
‘Lossless Audio’ on Spotify refers to its new feature, where users will get a richer and detailed music experience than ever before. In simple words, lossless means the music will be streamed in CD-quality or better quality without compressing the fine details in the sound. The feature will be available to Premium subscribers who will be able to listen to soundtracks in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec). The feature will roll out in October.
It means listeners would be able to listen to more crisp vocals, clear instrument sound, and get an overall more immersive music experience. The quality will be almost similar to being in the studio and listening to an artist. Otherwise, in normal cases, music is played in standard compressed formats that shrink file sizes by trimming audio details. Lossless will retain every minor detail that makes a huge difference to those who value sound precision.
The specialty of the ‘Lossless Audio’ update lies in the fact that Spotify users were requesting the music streaming giant for higher-quality audio for years. Other competitors, Apple Music and Tidal, have already offered lossless options, so Spotify’s new feature brings it on even ground with the others. At the same time, it gives a signal that the platform wants to offer the best listening experience for its 600+ million users. For daily listeners, it would be a chance to hear their favourite songs with new depth. But, for audiophiles, it is finally a fulfilment of a long-standing demand.

Spotify Premium is available to all Premium Subscribers without any extra charges. To activate the lossless feature, you need to simply go to the Spotify app and tap your profile icon. Among other options, search for ‘Settings and Privacy’. Next, go to Media Quality and select ‘LossLess’ under Wi-Fi, cellular, or downloads. It is advised to use Wi-Fi for streaming ‘Lossless files’ because they are larger in size. You can even use wired headphones or speak to listen to it. The regular Bluetooth technology compresses signals and can’t yet deliver full lossless quality.
‘Lossless Audio’ will be available on Spotify across 50 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and more. Are you excited for the new ‘Lossless feature’? Let us know.
