Will There Be Another Film In 'Knives Out' Series? Know About 'Wake Up Dead Man's Potential Sequel

Detective 'Benoit Blanc' is not going to slow down any time soon. After the recent release of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, viewers are already asking whether there is another film on the way or not. Since Wake Up Dead Man, the third installment in the franchise, has already earned praise for its gothic tone, impressive writing, and exceptional performances, there is already curiosity about Benoit's next case, and both Craig and writer-director Rian have hinted that the mysteries are not over yet.

Will there be a fourth Knives Out film? 

After Wake Up Dead Man's release, Rian Johnson will complete his USD 400 million two-sequel deal with Netflix. But the filmmaker has clarified that he is nowhere near done with the 'Benoit Blanc' universe. During a conversation at the Los Angeles premiere of the third film, Rian told The Hollywood Reporter that he feels "creatively energised". Therefore, he has already begun discussing ideas with Daniel Craig. Hinting he has started brainstorming, Rian told:

"Daniel and I are already starting to formulate… what could the next one be if we do another one?" 

In October 2025, Rian Johnson shared that he had "had nothing planned yet" for a fourth film. He even joked that reporters could pitch him some ideas. Yet, by November 18, 2025, industry updates confirmed that Rian and Daniel had begun to develop ideas that highlighted a shift in the momentum of development. Daniel shared the same sentiment in his previous interviews, where he claimed that he would return as 'Benoit Blanc' as long as he and Rian are having fun making new mysteries. 

Rian Johnson will not rush the plot for Wake Up Dead Man's sequel 

Although initial discussions have begun, Rian Johnson confirmed that he has not yet written a script. He shared that he prefers not to play sequels too far ahead and wants every installment to feel fresh, timely, and different from the last. Sharing his thought process behind the genre experimentation and changing cast, he said:

"I don't know why I would stop doing it if we could keep making them."

What to expect from Wake Up Dead Man 2? 

Since the two-movie contract with Netflix is done, the fourth film may find a new distributor. The filmmaker has repeatedly shared how his biggest inspiration has been Agatha Christie, who reinvented the mystery genre with every new novel. He took forward the same philosophy into the Knives Out films, where every installment has its own distinct aesthetic and subgenre. 

For instance, Knives Out was like a classic whodunit. Simultaneously, the second installment was like a star-studded satire with numerous twists, and now Wake Up Dead Man is a darker, gothic horror-tinged mystery. We can expect the fourth film to deliver another dramatic tonal shift. Rian Johnson said that he enjoys exploring "different corners of the mystery genre," suggesting fans can expect a new atmosphere, new twists, and an entirely new cast of suspects.

Knives Out was created by Rian Johnson in 2019 and became an instant phenomenon, receiving praise for its screenplay and the exceptional performances of its ensemble cast. The first film earned over USD 311 million worldwide, prompting Netflix to acquire two sequels for over USD 400 million, one of the biggest deals in streaming history. The film premiered at TIFF on September 26, 2025, before being released in selected theaters on November 26, 2025. The film features an ensemble cast including Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Andrew Scott, and Mila Kunis. It will release on Netflix on December 12, 2025.
