Vaani Kapoor recently sat for an interview with News18 Showsha, where she discussed the beauty standards she faced during her early days in the industry. Being a part of the industry is not an easy task, especially if you are an outsider in the tightly knit community. While making beautiful representations on screen, the industry is plagued with unrealistic beauty standards. And the Bell Bottom actress had a candid conversation about the same.
Vaani Kapoor, during the conversation, recalled how she was dropped from a film by a director because of her skin colour. The actress, who has shifted her base to Mumbai from New Delhi to carve a niche for herself in the movies, revealed that a filmmaker told that she wasn't 'milky white' enough for the industry. She was quoted as saying:
"I haven't been told directly, but information reaches me via other people. A filmmaker had once said that I wasn't fair enough to land a role. He said that I wasn't 'milky white.'"
In the same conversation, Vaani Kapoor revealed that she told herself that if that was the requirement of the project, then she had no interest in being a part of it. She added that she knew that she could find better projects for herself. Vaani revealed that this happened a long time ago and stated:
"I told myself that it is what it is. If that's a requirement, I don't want to be a part of his projects. The feelings are completely mutual there. He can find his milky white beauty or his fair and lovely woman. I know that I can find a better filmmaker for myself. This happened ages ago. And that filmmaker wasn’t from Mumbai."
The actress further shared how while she dealt with those comments with grace, she is still body-shamed. She revealed that there are comments about her being too skinny. However, she likes herself the way she is, hence they don't usually bother her. She stated:
"I should put on some weight because people like women with fuller bodies. But I like me! I don’t want to change anything about myself. I’m fit and healthy. I usually don’t get bothered by these things. Sometimes, you don’t know if such comments are coming from a place of concern or like good advice. But I think I’m pretty okay and I like who I am."
Coming to her work front, Vaani Kapoor will soon be seen in Mandala Murders. The series is being co-directed by Gopi Puthran, known for Mardaani. The film will feature the actress as a no-nonsense, strong-willed investigating officer. Gopi called it the era of angry young women on-screen. Vaani also reacted to the same and shared that she is rather happy with the way the audiences are now embracing a female character's rage. However, she also feels that a woman's strength is often confused with anger, and that's one bone she has to pick even off-screen.
