Twinkle Khanna, daughter of industry legends, Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, is known for being a woman of many talents. The gifted actress and author is also recognised for never shying away from sharing her blunt opinions on social conditions. Twinkle, who has her own column in The Times Of India, put forth her pertinent yet humorous outlook on India’s widespread sanitation problems. However, it is her playful remark about wishing ‘Dream Girl’, Hema Malini, was her mother that has caught everyone’s attention.
Twinkle’s column, Mrs Funnybones tackled issues prevalent in the country, including potholes, noise pollution, waterlogging, and availability of clean water. It was during her discussion on the last subject that Twinkle commended the actor-turned-politician, Hema Malini for her activist efforts.
At the same time, she posed a thoughtful question to citizens as to how they would respond to Hema’s appeal. Calling the readers’ attention to Hema’s Kent RO water purifier advertisements, Twinkle wrote:
“No one in the country is more interested in giving India clean water than Hema ji. After endorsing water purifiers for years, she is now performing a dance ballet on the shores of the Ganga to spread a message to keep our rivers clean. But will our citizens listen to her appeal, or will it be a case of you can lead a horse to the jal, but you can’t make him drink?”
Twinkle goes on to talk about a conversation that she had with her mother, Dimple Kapadia in her column. The latter had invited her over one evening. However, the idea was immediately rejected by Twinkle despite the two living relatively close. Elaborating on how the short walk involved jumping over potholes and dog poop, Twinkle shared her response to Dimple and wrote:
“Mom, by the time I get to your place, I feel like I am in a Super Mario Bros game without any power-up magic mushrooms on the way.”
Twinkle then shared one of her biggest ‘pet peeves’ with her mother and mentioned that Indian citizens were yet to develop civic sense. She stated that this was the reason why the development of Indian infrastructure continued to lag behind despite crores being spent on it. She revealed what she had told Dimple in her column, Mrs Funnybones and wrote:

“It doesn’t matter how much we spend on infrastructure if we can’t stop our fellow Indians from making Rorschach patterns of paan on street corners and lynching people because of religious differences.”
Dimple had spent the majority of the conversation making sounds that Twinkle mistook as encouragement. However, after having listened to her daughter’s final jab about the country having “harmonious horns” if not environmental harmony, she made a quip of her own:
“Beta, since you are worried about pollution, let me tell you there was less noise pollution during the Ganpati processions than what you are doing right now.”
Following the playful joke, Dimple simply hung up the phone. However, not to be outdone, Twinkle had one final tongue-in-cheek response for her mother that she made through her column. She wrote:
"This is not the first time I have wished that Hema Malini was my mother instead. Not only could we discuss clean water at length, but I would also receive a lifetime supply of free water purifiers."
